The opening day of the Wai Wai U-19 National League saw some extraordinary performances as Region No 3 (Kathmandu) and Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) registered big victories. Subash Khakurel scored 140 as Kathmandu amassed 322/9 in 50 overs to beat Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) by 144 runs at the IOE Ground, Pulchowk. At TU Ground, Bibek Chaudhary took 7 wickets to bowl out Region No 2 (Birgunj) for 61 in 19.1 overs as Bhairahawa win by 60 runs.

Region No 2 (Birgung) became the U-19 national champions defeating Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) by 99 runs in the final of the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament at the TU Cricket Ground on Sunday. Led by captain Akash Singh Pariyar and Kanchan Thapa’s knocks, Birgunj scored 169 in 49 overs before bowling out Nepalgunj for 51 runs in 21.1 overs.

Region No 1 Biratnagar secured fifth position after defeating Region No 6 (Baitadi) by five runs in the rain-marred fifth place playoff at the BSAM Ground on Friday. Biratnagar were 129/3 in 32 overs chasing Baitadi’s 157 when rain prematurely ended the match. Biratnagar were five runs ahead under Duckworth Lewis System and declared the winner.

Region No 2 Birgunj filled in the final spot in the semifinal lineup of the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament defeating Region No 6 Baitadi by 54 runs on Thursday. Birgunj will now play Region No 3 Kathmandu who defeated Region No 5 Nepalgunj by three wickets to finish at the top of the table of Group A. Nepalgunj plays Region No 4 Bhairahawa on other semifinal.

Lal Bahadur Adhikari’s second man of the match helped Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) register a three-wicket win over Region No 6 (Baitadi) at TU Ground and confirm a place in semifinal of the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament on Wednesday. Region No 1 (Biratnagar) crashed out the event after a three-wicket defeat against Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) at BSAM Ground – a result that also confirmed semifinal berth for Nepalgunj and Region No 3 (Kathmandu).

Region No 3 (Kathmandu) and Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) registered victories on the opening day of the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament on Tuesday. Riding on captain Gyanendra Malla’s unbeaten 48, Kathmandu defeated Region No 1 (Biratnagar) by six wickets at the TU Cricket Ground while Lal Bahadur Adhikari’s all-round performance gave Bhairahawa a 29-run victory over Region No 2 (Birgunj) at the BSAM Ground.

Four-time defending champions Nepal will start the 2009 ACC U-19 Elite Cup campaign with Saudi Arabia on April 22 in Kuwait, according to Asian Cricket Council (ACC). The winner of the event will represent Asia in the ICC U-19 World Cup 2010 in Kenya. Nepal has represented Asia in the world event five times in a row.

Region No 4 Bhairahawa was left ruing a run-out as Sharad Vesawkar helped Region No 3 Kathmandu win the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament at the TU Cricket Ground on Saturday.

Kathmandu set up the final with defending champions Bhairahawa as the repeat of last year’s final with a 72-run victory over Nepalgunj at the TU Cricket Ground.

Region No 4 Bhairahawa made the semifinal match against Region No 1 Biratnagar look like a mismatch registering a 73-run victory to enter the final of the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament at the TU Cricket Ground on Thursday.

When Rahul BK was bowling during Bhairahawa’s first match against Nepalgunj, national vice-captain Shakti Gauchan was praising the little-boy saying: ‘he bowls better than me.’ The left-arm spinner proved it with an all-round performance against Birgunj that took Bhairahawa and Nepalgunj to the semifinals.

At 138/9, the team that scored tournament highest 326 looked like heading for a defeat; but Rom Shrestha, the fat-boy, had other ideas. With the last man, Raman Shrestha, he added 45 valuable runs with three sixes and three fours to set a platform for a 77-run victory for Region No 3 Kathmandu against Region No 1 Biratnagar at the TU Cricket Ground.

Region No 5 Nepalgunj survived late pressure to register a four-wicket victory over Region No 2 Birgunj in the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament at TU Cricket Ground on Monday.

It was the match that produced just 168 runs apart from two splendid bowling figures. It also confirmed the semifinal berth for Biratnagar and Kathmandu and ended Baitadi’s campaign in the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament with the second defeat. In a low scoring match, Region No 1 Biratnagar beat Region No 6 Baitadi by 14 runs at the TU Cricket Ground.

Hadn’t Region No 5 Nepalgunj inexperienced in match practice, they would have registered an amazing win over two-time defending champions Region No 4 Bhairahawa in the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament at TU Cricket Ground. But they weren’t and Bhairahawa registered a 29-run victory.

Sharad Vesawkar has established himself as a mainstay in the national team and it should not be a wonder for many that he scored 153 runs against Baitadi in the Under-19 National League.

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) announced the schedule for the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament on Wednesday. The event will kick off on June 1 and the final will be held on June 9.
