Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) announced the national team for the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 5 to be held in Kathmandu from February 20 to 27.
Birgunj’s Anil Mandal has been included in the national team for the first time. A slot for opening batsman was empty after experienced Paresh Lohani pulled out of the team citing personal reasons.
Bhairahawa’s spinner Rahul Kumar BK, who last played for national team in 2007, makes a return. ICC has suspended him along with Sagar Khadka during the Youth World Cup in 2007 for suspect action.
“We were informed that Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has found nothing wrong after he improved his action and we selected him,” Arun Aryal, the chief of the national selection committee told Cricket Nepal.
Sharad Vesawkar also makes in the national team. He was not named in the preliminary squad due to his poor health but was asked to submit his health report after Paresh’s pullout. Sharad was then included in the closed-camp training.
Binod Bhandari, who debuted in UAE, continues in the squad after his impressive performance in the ACC T20. His debut innings included a six in the last ball that tied the match against Kuwait.
The committee also entrusted Paras Khadka to lead the team. Paras took over the captaincy from Binod Das for the ACC Twenty20 Cup held in UAE in November, 2009.
Other members of the team are former captain Binod, U-21 captain Gyanendra Malla, Shakti Gauchan, Mehboob Alam, Sanjam Regmi, Dipendra Chaudhary, Basanta Regmi, Mahesh Chhetri and Amrit Bhattarai.
Those named as alternatives are Subash Khakurel, Chandra Saud, Pradeep Airee and Bhuwan Karki.
The United States of America (USA), Jersey, Singapore, Bahrain, Fiji and hosts Nepal are in fray for the event, a gateway to the 2015 Cricket World Cup. Top two teams from the Div 4 will qualify for the Division 4 slated for August in Italy.
The top two teams from Div 4 will earn the tickets to the ICC World Cup Qualifiers scheduled for July-August in Scotland in 2013. The top four teams from the 12-team qualifiers will play in the 2015 World Cup.
Nepal will open their qualifying campaign against Jersey at the Birendra Sainik Awasiya Mahavidhyalaya (BSAM) Ground on February 20.

Well, good to hear the final squad of WCL 5. Sharad Is in, good for Nepal and some youngsters too. But we will be missing Paresh.
Anyway, the team has to move on. The home crowd, great expectations and the home pitch, what more required for Nepal. Nepal has never disspointed the home crowd and hope the same this time around.
I am really inspired by the Nepalese team. I never give up hope for them. I started following Nepalese senior team keenly from 3 day game held in TU ground back in 2005 against UAE. What a third day game that was. The boys really played very well with lot of enthusiasm, team spirt and effort to win the match. The effort of the boys and the support from the crowd therein, mindblowing. Cant forget those days.
Nepalese team needs to play with the same spirit again. Take inspirations from the games that you won.Fight like a lion never give up, and remember there is a great future waiting for you ahead.
I am sure that the Nepalese team will not let us down this time as in Jersey earlier.
Good Luck guys. We are always with you….
Ke garnu Nepal bhanda pa6i cricket khelne Afganistan Div 1 ma pugyo hamro palo kahile aaune hoo??? Roy dias lai hataune ho kee k gareraa hoo CAN le sochnu parne bela aayako 6.
Any way best of luck for Nepali Team, and hope they will promoted to Div 4.
The final team selection has been done for WCL-5; which looks pretty good on the paper. In recent times, the cricket has taken a backstage and recent performance in SAG in Dhaka has further dampened the enthusiasm of cricket aficionados. So, the national team has got an opportunity to prove its worth and revive the cricket glory. And nothing other could have been better than this very important WCL-5 tournament to prove its point. Since at the time of writing this comment, practice match held between FIJI and REGION NO. 3 KATHMANDU resulted the latter winning it comprehensively. The clinical precision and professional workmanship performances by Subash Khakurel, Rupesh Shrivastav and Suman Uday earned victory for the side. The National team should draw inspiration from this performance and display high-level of cricket in the upcoming tournament.
Best of luck guys…
is it true that there is no semifinal this time?
then it’s so good for nepal as we have lost too many semis
