Host Bhairahwa was in commanding position at the close of play on day one reducing Nepalgunj to 54/8 in 30 overs in response to its 275/8 in 60 overs.

Hosts Region No 4 Bhairahawa dominated the first day of the Shikhar Senior Two-Day National League Cricket Tournament match against Region No 5 Nepalgunj at the Siddartha Stadium on Saturday.

On the first day, Bhairahawa scored 275/8 in its first innings before the mandatory declaration in 60 overs and bowled brilliantly to bring down Nepalgunj to 54/8 in 30 overs with an overall lead of 221 runs. At stumps, Nirmal KC was unbeaten on 19 and Akash Shakya on two for Nepalgunj.

Bhairahawa innings was anchored by Shakti Gauchan who had scored a century in the earlier match against Baitadi. He scored 80 runs off 116 balls with 14 fours.

Despite losing Dipen Shakya (13) early, Shakti added 62 runs with Dipesh Khatri (28) and 89 runs with Basanta Regmi (30). Apart from them, Amit Shrestha (25), Manoj Baishya (22) and Bijay Thapa (19*) also got some runs for Bhairahawa.

For Nepalgunj, Durga Sen, Sammu Khan and Bharat Dangi each took two wickets while two of the batsmen were run out.

Nepalgunj’s reply was forgettable as it lost first six wickets for 26 runs in 15.4 overs. Dipesh and Bijay each took two while two batsmen were run out. Later, Rishikesh Sharma claimed two to make it 46/8. On the first day, Bhairahawa gathered 9.5 bonus points while Nepalgunj got five.

Similarly, the match between Region No 1 Biratnagar and Region No 6 Baitadi at Kalaiya Cricket Ground and Region No 2 Birgunj and Region No 3 Kathmandu at Birgunj Cricket Ground were also washed out without a ball being bowled. All four teams received 10 bonus points from the game.

Baitadi is still leading the points table with 50.5 points from three matches while Birgunj is second with 37.5 points from two games. Biratnagar is third with 34.5 from three matches followed by Bhairahawa (21.5 points from two matches), Kathmandu (18.5 points from two games) and Nepalgunj (15 points from two matches).

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has postponed further matches of the events due to technical reasons.

Baitadi bowled Nepalgunj out for 96 runs in the second innings after declaring at 101/6 and setting a target of 268 runs at the Kohalpur Cricket Ground. Baitadi had scored 259/8 in the first innings while Nepalgunj only managed 93.

Resuming the day at 18/2, Baitadi failed to repeat the batting dominance of the first day. It lost wickets at regular interval to go down 37/4. Manoj Malla, who scored 19, went soon afterward making it 56/5. Deepak Malla (35*) and Binod Chhetri (11) then added 45 runs for the sixth wicket to take Nepalgunj past 100-mark.

Dhirendra declared the innings immediately after Binod was trapped leg before by Durga Sen at 101/6 in 28.5 overs. Nepalgunj had a daunting task of scoring 268 runs in 65 overs. It tried to save the match but Dhirendra along with Rajendra Chand made that difficult.

The opening pair shared six wickets between them to help Baitadi bowl out the opponents for 96 in 34 overs. Only Sammu Khan (23*) and captain Durga Sen (22) put runs on the board. Dhirendra was chosen man-of-the-match for his match figure of 9/43 and 75 runs in the first innings.

Earlier on the first day, Baitadi took an overall lead of 184 runs. Electing to bat first, the visiting team declared its first innings at 259/8 in 58 overs with Dhirendra Chand, Prem Chaudhary and Binod Chhetri scoring half-centuries. Region No 5 Nepalgunj was bowled out for 93 runs in its first innings. At stumps, Baitadi was 18/2 in 6 overs.

Dhirednra scored 75 while Prem got 52 and Binod 50 to ensure a big total for Baitadi. For Nepalgunj, Bharat DC took three wickets while Shammu Khan took two.

Rajendra Chand and Dhirendra bowled brilliantly to give their team a chance to win. Dhirendra took six wickets while Rajendra took four as the hosts were bowled out for 93 in its first innings. Nirmal KC topscored with 28 while Shammu remained unbeaten on 20.

In the second innings, Baitadi lost two quick wickets – one each to Durga and Shambhu ending the day at 18/2.

Captain Binod Das bowled superbly to set a target of 87 runs in 31 overs for the hosts which they achieved in the last ball of the match losing eight wickets in difficult batting conditions.

After scoring 153 runs in the first innings and bowling out Birgunj for 121 runs, Biratnagar looked like heading for a victory. But Binod had other things in his mind and claimed six wickets to bowl out the visitors for 54 in 26.5 overs. He gave away only 12 runs in his 10 overs.

Only Kumar Bugel (16*), Kushal Tuladhar (14) and Ajay Rajbanshi (11) reached double figure while Mehboob Alam, Sunil Bista, Gopal Mandal and Manjeet Shrestha failed to score. Apart from Binod, Sanjam Regmi and Raj Mohammad each took two wickets.

It was Bikash Dali who set the platform for the win with 40 runs off 76 balls. He was the one who stayed at the crease seeing his teammates come and go. From 21/0, Birgunj went down to 36/4 with left-arm spinner Lakpa Lama claiming three wickets for 12 runs in his 6 overs.

Bikash and Sanjam added valuable 41 runs for the fifth wicket before Sanjam was run out for 17. Bikash followed five runs later making it 82/6 and two more wickets fell giving some anxious moments to Birgunj players. In the last over bowled by Mehboob, Birgunj required five runs. Shyam Thapa (3*) hit the winning single off the last ball.

Sanjam was declared man-of-the-match for his match figures of 7/48 and valuable contribution of 16* and 17 runs with the bat.
