Nepal has earned 95.5 points from four games while second-placed UAE has 84.5 points. Singapore (69 pts), Malaysia (66.5 pts) and Hong Kong (60 pts) are the other teams in the event.

“No final will be taking place for this tournament,” Asian Cricket Council’s Events Organizer KK Haridas informed. “As per the points earned, Nepal is at the top and hence it is the champion.”

“Nepal have proved worthy winners of the Premier League”, he added. “They have been consistent challengers to UAE for three-day supremacy and though Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore have all had their moments ultimately Nepal and UAE have played the most consistent cricket. Nepal have been the only team in Asia to ever defeat UAE, which they did in 2005”

Defending champions UAE could have won the championship hadn’t their game against Singapore, scheduled for March 2-4 been cancelled due to rain. They only received 10 points from that match before going into the last match of the event against Malaysia with no hopes of retaining the championship.

UAE made a quick work against Malaysia defeating them in two days by an innings and 61 runs and earned 30 points to go into second position.

“To win the tournament played by top five non-Test playing Asian nations, it’s a big thing,” Nepal’s captain Binod Das commented. “But I am little bit sad that the victory didn’t create the buzz as it should have.”

Binod expressed disappointment towards ACC for not giving the event the due credit. “This tournament should have been taken seriously by all because I believe this event is better than the ACC Trophy,” he said. The Premier League, (previously the Fast Track Countries Tournament) is to be replaced in the coming season by the ACC Twenty20 Cup for the top ten ACC countries according to ACC performance-based rankings.

“We were on the second position last year,” he added. “And I am happy and satisfied by the way we played.”

Nepal booked a spot in the final of the ACC Premier League despite settling for a draw against hosts Malaysia at the Kinrara Oval, Kuala Lumpur today.

When the match ended due to bad light, with seven mandatory overs remaining, Malaysia were 101/7 chasing 245 for victory. Earlier, Nepal declared its second innings at 180/6. In first innings, Nepal had scored 226 and Malaysia 162.

Nepal earned 16.5 bonus points from the match while Malaysia got 13. Overall, after four matches, Nepal is leading the points table with 95.5 with only UAE having the possibility of doing better. UAE, with 45 points, have two games on hand – one each against Singapore (59 points) and Malaysia (57.5 points). The maximum any team can earn from a match is 34 points. Hong Kong, who drew with UAE in their last match, is currently second with 60 points from four games.

Resuming the day at 37/1, Nepal was buoyed by a fine third wicket partnership between Shakit Gauchan (47) and Gyanendra Malla which lifted Nepal to 165-6 after Sharad Veshwakar (23) and Paresh Lohani (27) contributed.

Vice-captain Shakti’s 147-ball knock saw just three boundaries while Gyanendra scored 27 off 64 balls with four boundaries. Basant Regmi (22 not out) also played a good knock before Nepal declared giving 245 runs target for the hosts to be scored in less than two hours.

Pacer Mehboob Alam bowled good striking in his first over and seventh as Malaysia were down to 34/3 by the ninth over. But Suresh Navaratnam plucked away two sixes, on consecutive deliveries bowled by man of the match Raj Kumar Pradhan, and three boundaries in an attacking game en route to a crafty 33.

It was then Paras Khadka picked up three valuable wickets and skipper Binod Das one to down the hosts to 90/7 with 14 overs remaining on the day. But then the Malaysians played defiantly till the match come to an early end.

“I cannot have asked for more from the players,” Nepal’s coach Roy Dias said. “I am very happy with their performance as we made a remarkable comeback after our lack luster batting performance in the first innings.” Dias was indicating the stage on the first day when Nepal was 122/9.

A day after hitting 68 not out, Raj Kumar Pradhan returned with another laudable performance. This time it was with the ball taking five wickets to wreck hovac on the Malaysians as the hosts were bowled out for 162 runs in first innings.

Raj Kumar’s second five-wicekt haul, and his best figure, gave Nepal a 62-run lead in the first innings. In their second innings, Nepal scored 37/1, losing Sarad Vesawkar for 23, with a overall lead of 101 runs going into the final day of the crucial ACC Premier League match at the Kinrara Oval Stadium.

For Malaysia, it was a sad tale of batting as only Esrafiz Aziz (46) and Suhan Kumar (40) giving some tough times to the Nepali bowlers.

Paras Khadka began the Malaysian trouble by bowling Rakesh Madhavan for 12. Vice-captain Shakti Guachan then removed Dinesh Mathuraman (5) caught by Raj Kumar at the deep covers. Part timer Sarad Vesawkar picked up the other opener Suhan Kumar with Mehboob Alam completing the catch as the hosts went down to 58/3.

Then it was Raj Kumar all over. The leg-spinner took five wickets in his 18-over spell getting rid of Rohan Selvaratnam (14), Thushara Kodikara (7), Suresh Navaratnam (11), Shanker Retinam (0) and M Krishnamurathi (8).

Rohan Suppiah (9) was run out and captain Binod Das trapped top-scorer Aziz plumb to end the Malaysia innings. The day was gloomly and the rain disturbed the match time and again finally ending it after Nepal batted 11 overs in the second innings.

Sarad Vesawkar scored 23 runs before being stumped by Shankar off Krishnamurathi. Nepal will be looking to play the first session tomorrow and getting as much as possible runs before finally trying to bowl out Malaysia for a outright win.

So far, Nepal had earned 10 points to Malaysia’s 8.5 from the match.

What would you expect when the scoreboard is reading 122/9 and No 11, with an average of 7.83 in 13 matches, walks in? Maybe the batman on the other end will hit a few runs and he would swing bats a few times before finally ending with a sky-rocketed catch or castled stumps.

Here is the different story. He scores a brilliant half-century helping him team reach the total unimaged a few hours earlier. If Jason Gillespie scoring a Test double century was a surprise, Raj Kumar Pradhan, scoring a 68 not out, was a miracle because he is so used to getting out quick.

But the 34-year-old legspinner did the magic by adding 104 runs with Sanjam Regmi, the off-spinner who was in just a spot earlier to him. And, he could have added a few more, maybe an unlikely century, hadn’t his partner had got run out on 39 ending the 48.2 overs long stay.

Nepal with that went on to score 226 in the first innings getting 4.5 bonus points in the crucial ACC Premier League tie against the hosts Malaysia at Kinrara Stadium. When the rain forced the early end of the match, Malaysians were 4/0 in their 4 overs.

Raj Kumar scored 68 not out in 118 balls with 11 fours while Sanjam got 39 off 137 with three fours.

Earlier, Malaysia won the toss and invited Nepal to bat first. They proved their decision right as opening pair of Thushara Kodikara and Suresh Navaratnam bowled their hearts along with Krishnamurathi pushing Nepal on backfoot as they tourists went down to 114/8.

Navaratnam and Kodikara took three wickets each while Krishnamurathi returned with two.

Captain Binod Das was then bowled by Arudin for four on 122 as the Malaysians looked for a early batting opportunites before Raj Kumar and Sanjam denied them. Apart from Mahesh Chhetri (29 off 77) and Gyanendra Malla (24 off 35), no other batsmen did contribute much.

Paresh Lohani, Mehboob Alam and Paras Khadka all got out on 12. Malaysia claimed all possible five bonus points from the bowling.

Best bowler, man of the match and best batsman of the match all beam up after Nepal’s victory.

Nepal cleaned up the remaining 7 wickets in two hours to register a 205-run victory over Singapore on the last day of the ACC Premier League match at the TU Cricket Ground.

Resuming their innings at 116/3, Singapore soon went into trouble as the overnight batsmen returned pavilion early. Captain Chaminda Ruwan added six more runs and completed his half-century but soon found counter-part Binod Das at the covers when he sliced a Mehboob Alam delivery.

Before that, Buddika Mendis nicked Binod as wicket-keeper Mahesh Chhetri took a good low catch. He didn’t add to his overnight 10 while Ruwan made 55 off 92 balls with nine fours.

Binod then sent Mohd Shoib’s stumps into air and next ball Pramodh Raja played him straight to Raj Kumar Pradhan at mid-on. He was on the hat-trick but his lbw appeal against Iftekar Haider was turned down.

Basant Regmi and Raj Kumar each took a wicket to bring them down to 176/9 before the last pair added 20 runs. Binod could have finished with 10 wickets in the match but his two overs to the last pair produced no wickets. It was Paras Khadka who go the last man, B Vignesh, out. Vignesh was caught smartly at slips by Binod.

Vignesh scored 23 while Haider went on to score 18. Binod finished with 4/52 – a match haul of 9/76 while Mehboob and Basant took two each. Mehboob was declared man of the match while Paresh Lohani and Binod Das were declared best batsman and best bowler respectively.

Nepal earned 33.5 points while Singapore got 12.5 from the match.

Brief scorecard: Nepal 313/9d (Paresh 103, Mehboob 76, Paras 69) and 178/6 (Paras 56, Mehboob 51) defeated Singapore 90 (Binod Das 5/24, M Shoib 20*) and 196 (Binod Das 4/52, C Ruwan 55) by 205 runs.

DAY II Report

Nepal on the verge of victory

Binod Das took five wickets to end Singaporean innings at 90.
Nepal eyes a thumping victory over Singapore in the ACC Premier League after a splendid batting and bowling performance on the second day at TU Cricket Ground Saturday.

Nepal bowled out Singapore for 90 runs – just 43 more than overnight score of 47/4 – taking a first innings lead of 223 runs. In the second innings, Nepal declared at 178/6 after Mehboob Alam and Paras Khadka each added their second half-century in the match. At stumps, Singapore was 116/3 needing 286 more for victory.

Early this morning, captain Binod Das took three wickets to complete his sixth five-wicket haul while Mehboob, Paras and Shakti Gauchan each took one to end Singapore innings. Binod returned with 5/24 and was on a hat trick once. Singapore was at one stage 58/8 but a 30-run stand between topscorer Mohammad Shoaib (20*) and B Vignesh (13) took it near the three-digit mark.

Nepal could have enforced follow-on but that would have robbed Nepal of bonus batting points of second innings. Nepal batted again targeting 200 runs but Singapore bowled well to force a declaration at 178/6 that yielded 3.5 batting points.

Paras was the topscorer with 56 off 45 balls with six fours and three sixes while Mehboob got 51 off 53 with six fours and a six. Openers Paresh Lohani (27), Sharad Vesawkar (16) and Gyanendra Malla (14) also contributed. Both Paras and Mehboob had scored half-centuries in the first innings.

Singapore had a mammoth target to achieve but it began positively as if chasing a victory. It was 74/2 in the first 15 overs but the spinners applied some brakes and the visitors ended the day at 116/3 with two Sri Lankan players unbeaten.

Captain Chaminda Ruwan, who had scored two centuries in the series’ two matches, is playing on 49 eight boundaries while Buddhika Mendis is on 10. Dharmichand Mulewa, who was dropped at long-on by Sharad while on 15, scored 28 before being caught at the same place off left-arm spinner Basanta Regmi. Mehboob and Binod have taken a wicket each.

DAY I Report

Nepal Takes Cotrol Over Singapore

Mehboob Alam scores a quick half-century to propel Nepal to 313/9d.

Opener Paresh Lohani scored his second century in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Premier League three-day match on Friday to put Nepal in a commanding position in the match against Singapore at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground.

Nepal declared its first innings at 313/9 while reduced Singapore to 47/4 before bad light stopped play on the first day.

This is the only third century from a Nepali batsman in the 14 ACC Premier League matches played. Paresh capitalized on the three drop-chances in the batting friendly track at the TU Ground. He belted 11 fours in his innings of 103 runs off 190 deliveries. He reached the century with a single off Dharmichand Mallewa towards gully. He was dropped on three occasions while he was on 13, 42 and 82 runs respectively.

Earlier Nepal had a rather indifferent start loosing another opener Mahesh Chhetri for a duck after the Singaporean skipper Chaminda Ruwan elected to field first at the grassy wicket of TU Ground. After an early shock Sharad Vesawkar accompanied Paresh for the second wicket with a partnership of 45 runs. Sharad, who made fluent 35 runs with six boundaries, chopped a short ball from Buddhika Mendis on to his stumps while attempting a pull.

Gyandedra Malla (4) did not last long either as he ended up giving an easy catch at mid-wicket off Dharmichand. That followed with another wicket of Shakti Gauchan who did not trouble the scorers either as Nepal slumped to 74/4. Mehboob Alam’s arrival at the crease helped Nepal’s course as he played a flamboyant innings of 74 runs with three sixes and 10 boundaries to bail Nepal out of trouble.

He reached his half-century with a six off Dharmichand in 57 balls. He perished while trying to cut one rising delivery off Mohammad Shoib before giving a 118-run stand for the fifth wicket with Paresh. Nepal was already eyeing 300 plus by that time with more than 37 overs remaining in its first innings. Paras Khadka’s aggressive innings of 69 runs at the end produced another commendable stand of 83 runs for the sixth wicket with Paresh.

He also reached half-century with a six off Dharmichand in same number of balls. Paresh than fell while attempting a tired looking sweep shot off Dharmichand for 103 runs. Basanta Regmi became the third Nepali batsman to return without scoring while skipper Binod Das remained unbeaten on 22 runs. Nepal was at 308/6 at tea but decided to carry on just to loose two more wickets for just 5 runs.

Dharmichand, who was at the receiving end of the Nepali batsmen’s onslaught, ended up picking four wickets for Singapore at the cost 101 runs while Buddhika Mendis picked a couple.

Skipper Binod Das led Nepali bowling attack from the front capturing two wickets to put Nepal on the driver’s seat. He went through the defense of Meyer Gleen Brenden (19) to uproot his stumps in the third over. In the next over wicket-keeper Mahesh Chhetri took a splendid diving catch down the leg side that took the gloves of Riaz Altaf Hussain (4). Nepal had two more wickets in the total of 19 overs that Singapore played in its first innings.

Paras Khadka ran out Dharmichand for 11 runs as Singapore lost the third wicket at 40 runs. But the biggest wicket Nepal was of Buddhika Mendis. Gyanedra Malla pulled up a blinder at short-leg off Raj Kumar Pradhan to get rind off the lefthander for a duck.

Nepal has accumulated eight bonus points, six from batting and two from bowling, while Singapore has managed five bonus points, 4.5 from bowling and 0.5 from batting. Skipper Chaminda Ruwana (10*) along with Mohammad Shoib (0*) will resume the play for Singapore on the second day.

Nepali batting lineup failed once again as UAE registered a 97-run victory in the three-day ACC Premier League match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium Monday.

Chasing 205 for victory, Nepal began the third day at 33/2 but found it too difficult to bat against the Emirate attack at its den. The whole team succumbed to 107 runs in 62.1 overs. Earlier in the match, Nepal had scored 155 in the first innings replying to UAE’s 262/7 declared but made a mini-comeback bowling the hosts out for 97 runs in the second innings.

Lanky Ali Ashad once again proved lethal taking 4/41 while Zahid Shah took 2/20 taking a match haul of eight wickets. Arshad Ali took two to avenge the 172-run loss last year in Kathmandu.

For Nepal, Basanta Regmi scored 26 while vice-captain Shakti Gauchan scored 22 runs. From the match, Nepal claimed 13.5 bonus points while UAE got 30.5.

In overall standings of the five-nation event, Singapore is leading with 46.5 points from two matches while Nepal and Malaysia have 45.5 points from two matches. Hong Kong is placed fourth with 44.5 points from three games while UAE has 30.5 from a game.

Nepal’s three-day cricket match against UAE at the latter’s home is a nervous outing for the two teams looking for a kind of revenge. UAE is the team on top — winning the earlier versions of ACC Premier League twice and one-day ACC Trophy thrice and Nepal is the only team in the region that can threat its domination.

Last year, Nepal thrashed UAE by 172 runs in a three-day game. Earlier this year, UAE avenged that loss with an easy nine-wicket victory in the ACC Trophy semifinal in Malaysia. For this match, slated to begin o Saturday, Nepal looks to repeat last year’s form while UAE wants to convert the success of 50-over game into two-innings match.

“They have been on top for years and are certainly a strong team,” Nepal’s coach Roy Luke Dias believes. “It would be a tough game as they must be waiting for us for last year’s revenge.”

Dias speaks of any match cautiously, even when the opponent is the weakest one, and takes it the same way. No wonder he doesn’t say Nepal can defeat UAE —– a strong side that has defeated Nepal in all but one match. And Nepal is playing at its den. “It’s different than last year, because we are playing at their home,” Dias says. “And the high temperature there could be a deciding factor.”

Nepal team is boosted by the return of vice-captain Shakti Gauchan who missed the inaugural match against Hong Kong in Kathmandu due to eye problems. Nepal won the its first match in the five-team ACC Premier League collecting 32 points out of possible 34. And the win will lift Nepal’s morale in UAE.

“Winning against Hong Kong was important for us,” Dias adds. “It was the first match and a win in the first match gives confidence.” The long-time coach hopes to add one more feather in his cap by winning the ACC Premier League title and rues that Nepal missed it last year despite outplaying the eventual winner UAE.

“This is a crucial match because UAE is a strong team and our players must labor hard for the win,” Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) President Binaya Raj Pandey says. “If we win, we will put a hand on the title so I hope the team will put up a good performance.”

Captain Binod Das too hopes for a victory. “We are heading for UAE with hopes of repeating the last year’s feat,” Binod, who was also the man-of-the-match in the last year’s win, says. Binod completed 50 wickets in multi-day format matches in the match against Hong Kong and is ready to fire again for the country. “It’s a big ask to defeat them at their den, but we are on a positive mood with confidence that we can defeat them.”

He still misses Dhirendra Chand, a key player in fast bowling department, who is sidelined by spine injury. But there is left-hand seamer Amrit Bhattarai, who proved he could be as good with his Under-19 herocs, though a bit inexperienced in the senior level. Hard-hitting Mehboob Alam, the man-of-the-match in the win against Hong Kong, will be the other pacer along with Paras Khadka who can also do some spin if required.

The spin department looks complete with off-spinner Sanjam Regmi and leg-spinner Raj Kumar Pradhan complementing each-other. The left-arm spin of Shakti and Basanta Regmi gives more choice for the captain. Specialist batsmen in the team are Paresh Lohani, who hopes to recover from his struggling form, Sarad Vesawkar, Antim Thapa and Gyanendra Malla. Other players in the team include wicket-keepers Mahesh Chhetri and Manoj Katuwal.

The team is scheduled to fly for the match Thursday morning. CAN organized a program Wednesday to wish good luck to the team. The program was attended by National Sports Council’s vice-chairman Sitaram Maskey, acting member secretary Ajhar Manandhar and member Laxman Shrestha along with officials from CAN.

Cricket has been showing a great promise for the future and with every win, it increases. But so far the senior team has faltered in crunch matches disheartening fans. This time, the team hopes to change all that by continuing its good performance for a victory against a good team. Good luck, Nepal!
