A splendid first-wicket partnership between Bijay Gautam and Ayush Rana dashed hopes of Region No 6 Baitadi of winning it’s maiden national title as Region No 3 Kathmandu lifted the Boost Under-17 National Cricket Tournament title at the TU Cricket Ground on Saturday.

Man of the match Bijay and Ayush added 106-run in 23.3 overs for opening partnership as Kathmandu raced to 135 in 30.3 overs losing just three wickets. Earlier, Baitadi, who had entered the final with four wins in five league matches, had scored 132/9 in 40 overs.

Bijay scored match’s highest 48 off 69 balls with five fours, while Ayush got 40 off 76 deliveries with four boundaries. The duo returned in space of three balls when Bikram Sob bowled the 24th over.

Captain Prithi Baskota hit two fours in 10 balls for his 9 before losing his wicket to Bashu Giri leaving his team 11 runs shy of the title. Pramod Yadav (8) and Pawan Shrestha (6) completed the task without further damage.

Earlier, Baitadi won the toss and elected to bat first. The far-western team lost Pradeep Ayree in the third over. Ayree’s loss slowed down run scoring rate as Baitadi scored only 38 runs in next 14 overs.

They never recovered and despite a few stable partnerships, they always lagged behind in scoring and slogging during the last few overs also did not work. They finished at 132/9 in 40 overs with captain Surendra Bahadur Chand (27 off 82 balls) and Bhuwan Karki (18 of 21) being the top-scorers. Prithu and Ujjwal Thapa each grabbed three wickets while Keshav Yadav got two.

The consolation for Baitadi was Pradeep’s choice as the man of the series for his 125 runs and seven wickets in league matches. Kathmandu’s Prithu was declared best bowler for his 15 wickets in five matches while Birgunj’s Amit Shrestha got the best batsman award for his 150 in five matches.

Prizes were given by Sita Ram Maskey (National Sports Council vice-president), Upendra Prasad Bhattarai (Vice President of Cricket Association of Nepal), Binod Raj Rajbhandari (Member of CAN), Uttam Karmacharya (Member of CAN and Nepal’s first captain), Thakur Pratap Thapa (Member of CAN), Santosh Mardan Thapa (Member of CAN), Sushil Bhattarai (Secretary of Region No. 3 Kathmandu), M.B. Swaminathan (Country Manager, Boost) and Bijay Sharma.

Region No 3 Kathmandu lifted the Springwood National League Cricket Tournament title after emerging the winner of an epic battle with defending champions Region No 4 Bhairahawa at the TU Cricket Ground on Sunday.

The final was decided on the last ball with Bhairahawa felling by just a run. Requiring 169 in 36 overs for victory on a revised target, Bhairahawa ended at 167/9. Kathmandu had earlier scored 199 in 49.3 overs.

It was some terrific batting from the tail-enders that put Bhairahawa back on the track after the match looked dead for them at 136/9 with five overs to go. But No 10 Mohan Thapa attacked the bowling and netted 29 runs off 27 balls with a four and a six, but his efforts went in vain after he could not get four in last two balls.

Having gone into the last over with eight required, Mohan and last man Faizal Khan ran a run each on first four balls bowled by Paras Khadka. The fifth ball was a straight fuller that Mohan could only defend back to Paras. On the last ball, the team needed four to win but he could only get a two as Kathmandu players roared around the ground in celebration after winning the title for the first time in fourth final.

Before Mohan’s heroics, it was Rahul Biswokarma who scored 36 in 37 balls with two fours and a six to take his team near the required total. After the top order failed to get good runs. Among seven top order batsmen, only Shakti Gauchan (24), Antim Thapa (21) and Bijaya Thapa (19) got to double figure while four other totaled 16 runs.

It was Pramod Basnet who pegged Bhairahawa early by getting two openers in between of which Bijaya slipped while running to get run-out. Left-arm spinner Raju Basnet too got two in the middle while Sarad took two vital wickets – of Shakti and Rahul to simmer Bhairahawa hopes of becoming only second team after Biratnagar to defend the title.

“Rain played the spoilsport,” Bhairahawa captain Shakti said. The match was played on overcast condition and was stopped after three overs of Bhairahawa for rainfall and the target revised.

Earlier, Kathmandu’s decision to bat first proved a good one as their top order batted well. Captain Paresh Lohani and Dipendra Chaudhary added 43 as openers with Dipendra scoring 35 off 48 balls. Sarad got 44 off 81 balls and Gyanendra Malla topscored with 60 off 92 balls. Together, Sarad and Gyanendra added 91 runs for third wicket and took Kathmandu to a competitive total.

Paras’s late assault of 18 off 17 with two sixes and Pramod’s 10 took them to 199 in 49.3 overs. All Kathmandu wickets went to spinners with Basant Regmi taking three, Shakti and Rahul claiming two each.

Kathmandu received Rs 75,000 as the winners while Bhairahawa took home Rs 40,000. National Sports Council member secretary Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Surya Nepal’s vice-president Shyam Roy and Cricket Association of Nepal president Binaya Raj Pandey gave away the prizes to the winners.

At the Institute of Engineering Ground, the rehearsal of the title-clash between Region No 3 Kathmandu and Region No 4 Bhairahawa was abandoned due to rainfall after a farcical event that saw the match stopped for more than 100 minutes.

Bhairahawa won the toss and invited Kathmandu to bat first. Paresh Lohani followed his two half-centuries with 11 and Sharad Veswakar got 5 before Dipendra Chaudhary complained about the lack of the sight screen and Kathmandu decided to stop the match.

Dipendra complained that as the ball got older it looked like the wall on the background. “When we last played here, we told Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), we can not play without the screen,” captain Paresh Lohani said. The match originally scheduled for Lab Ground was shifted in the last minute.

The match was resumed after 102 minutes when the technical committee and two teams talked the matters and reduced the match to 45-overs affair. Kathmandu lost Dipendra immediately and Gyanendra Malla played an aggressive knock of 31 hitting two fours and two sixes.

Raju Basnet got 28 in 27 balls to take the team to 143/8 in 45 overs. Basant Regmi got out in the first ball of the innings for the second time in a row as he was trapped in front by Abhaya Rana. Manoj Baishya (10) and Amit Shrestha (1) fell to Pramod Basnet, who scored 32 in 122 balls as opener earlier, as Bhairahawa went down to 27/3 in 10 overs.

The match was stopped by rain in the 15th over with Shakti Gauchan (3) and Antim Thapa (13) at the crease.

Region No 1 Biratnagar finished third in the Springwood National League Cricket Tournament after defeating Region No 2 Birgunj by two wickets in the pace dominated low scoring match at the TU Cricket Ground on Friday.

Mehboob Alam took five wickets and Manjeet Shrestha grabbed three as the four-time champions bowled out Birgunj for a paltry 68 runs in 20.5 overs. Binod Das ensured Biratnagar toil hard to achieve the victory by claiming six wickets.

Birgunj got a disastrous start losing first eight wickets for only 25 runs in nine overs. It all began when Mehboob bowled Anil Mandal in the fourth ball to become the third player to get 50 wickets in the national league after Raju Basnet and Binod.

Mehboob’s deadly first five overs gave him five wickets and Manjeet got three in his first four overs as Birgunj was put in an embarrassing position of getting bowled for the lowest total in the event’s history.

Kumar Prasun saved Birgunj’s blushes, scoring 18 off 36 balls with two fours and most importantly taking his team past 44 – the lowest score in the event. Sameer Thapa got nine and the pair added 36 runs to give the team something to bowl for.

Birgunj too struck early when Pashupati Mandal got out in the third over but Sunny Pun (21) and Puspa Thapa (16) added 37 runs before Birgunj pegged them down. From 43/1, Biratnagar went down to 43/5 in less than two overs – Binod grabbing four of them and Sanjam Regmi picking one.

Binod claimed two more wickets but Mehboob ensured his contribution with bat getting the deserved result with an unbeaten 21 off 30 balls that included three fours. With the performance, Binod took his wickets tally to 59 – five ahead of Mehboob and six of Raju, who still has the Sunday’s final to play.

Paresh Lohani played yet another captain’s innings as Region No 3 Kathmandu set up the title clash in the Springwood National League Cricket Tournament with Region No 4 Bhairahawa defeating Region No 5 Nepalgunj by eight wickets at the TU Cricket Ground on Thursday.

Paras Khadka’s 3/14 restricted Nepalgunj to a lowly total of 109 in 46.1 overs before Paresh hit second half-century in a row as the hosts raced to victory in 29.2 overs losing just two wickets. At Lab School Ground, Region No 2 Birgunj beat Region No 6 Baitadi by three wickets.

Abhaya Rana took a wicket off his first ball to put Nepalgunj on the back foot straightaway and it could hardly score early on. When Nepalgunj lost second wicket off the last ball of the 12th over, it was 23/2 with a run-rate of less than two.

Anupam Singh (21) and Navin KC (11) provided some defiance against the bowling attack that gave away 22 extras to take the team past three digits. Paras bowled eight overs for his three scalps and Raju Basnet got 2/25. Sharad Vesawkar got the last two wickets in 13 balls to end the innings.

Kathmandu too did not start well losing Dipendra Chaudhary (4) in third over to Navin Shahi but the skipper shouldered the responsibility and carried on from Wednesday’s 79-run knock against Region No 1 Biratnagar to add 99 runs with Sharad Vesawkar and took Kathmandu two runs short of victory.

His 87-ball knock with 10 boundaries came to an end while trying to hit Ismail Ansari for a four to finish the game in style. Paras Khadka (2) and Sharad (16 in 72 balls) finished the match.

2006 champion Birgunj, playing for the pride, needed a valiant innings from No 9 Kumar Prasun to pull off a narrow victory against lowly Baitadi. Prasun scored 34 off 36 balls with three fours and three sixes to rescue his team from 88/7 in 18.5 overs chasing Baitadi’s 141 at the Lab Ground.

He partnered Sanjam Regmi (7) for 56 runs to take his team home after a batting failure. Binod Das (21), Sanjay Bomjam (19), Shovakant Pandey, Hasim Ansari and Raj Mohammad (all 10) got starts but could not continue as Rajendra Bam (4/32) and Sher Singh Khatri (3/32) pegged them down. Birgunj also benefited from 33 extras with Chandra Saud once again leading the wayward bowling with 12 wides.

Earlier, three wickets each from Sanjam and Raj had troubled Baitadi. Jagdish Budair and Binod Bhandari then played aggressively and got a few runs for the team. Jagdish hit three fours and four sixes for his 42 in 35 balls before Kumar got him out while Binod hit two sixes and three fours for a 32-ball 35.

Dhirendra Chand contributed 21 not out while opener Shakti Bhandari got 15 and Kamal Raj Joshi 10. Binod Das, Sameer Thapa and Kumar each took a wicket.
