Nepali girls will play Chinese girls in the opening match of the ACC U-19 Women’s Championship in Kuwait on February 3.

According to the provisional fixture published by Asian Cricket Council (ACC), defending champions Nepal faces Malaysia on February 4, UAE on February 5 and Thailand on February 7.

Two-time champions Nepal has been placed in group A.

Despite most of the girls participating in both the victories, including Nary Thapa, have crossed the age bar, the present squad is having many new players, a new coach and a new captain. But, the team is still confident of defending the title.

“Though we have new players in the squad, our bowling is good and the batsmen can bat for full 25 overs,” coach Navin Singh told Republica daily. “We need improvement in fielding as the players have been dropping catches in practice matches.”

Singh guided region no 7 Janakpur for the inaugural National U-19 Women´s Cricket Tournament last month.

Captain Rubina Chhetri, member of the U-19 squad which defended the title last year, said that the current squad is one of the best teams in the U-19. “In the past, our strength was bowling but in this squad our strength is in many departments.”

Chief selector Bijay Kumar Sharma expressed his confidence that the squad will lift the title. “Though the current squad has new players, senior players in the squad are helping new players improve their game.”

Sharma added the squad is somewhat weak in fielding, which may cause trouble for the team. “Due to lack of match experience, players are having trouble in running between the wickets as well.”

Ritu and three other national cricketers from the Asian Games squad did not find space in 18-member squad for the ACC Women’s Twenty20 Championship to be held in Kuwait from February 18 to 25.

Melina Rayamajhi, Binu Buda Magar and Maya Rawat were also axed from the national team.

Nary, who had captained Nepal in past, was relieved of captaincy on discipline ground for the ACC Women’s Twenty20 in 2009 and Asian Games.

“The performance in Asian Games was far below our expectations,” chief selection Bijaya Sharma said while announcing the team. “Nary has been re-appointed captain in view of her captaincy during the ACC U-19 which we won.”

Sharma also said that the decision to re-appoint Nary was taken considering improvements she had shown in discipline, game and captaincy.

Meanwhile, CAN informed that the team will travel to Pakistan for four to five matches against Pakistan’s national women’s team in Lahore. Pakistan is the winner of the Asian Games gold.

CAN will pick the final 14 after the completion of the closed-camp training beginning January 23.

The squad: Nary Thapa (captain), Rubina Chhetri (vice-captain), Manisha Rawal, Madhu Thapa, Sita Rana Magar, Khina Thapa Magar, Indu Verma, Janaki Bhatta, Rashmi Sharma, Sarita Magar, Karuna Bhandari, Neera Rajopadhyay, Mamta Thapa Magar, Shova Ale, Sita Shahi, Sonu Khadka, Manita Gautam, Rekha Rawal and Arun Aryal (coach).

Prithu Baskota is all set to become the first cricketer to lead three level of age-group national team after he was named captain for the upcoming ACC U-19 Elite Cup.

Prithu will lead the team that also consists of national players Rahul Kumar Biswokarma and Naresh Budhayar, the selection committee of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) announced.

Rahul is named vice-captain of the team that consists four debutant player. Rajesh Pulami, Mohammad Hashim, Faizal Khan and Rahul Pratap Singh are the players who have not represented the nation in any age-group level.

Other members of the team are Subash Khakurel, Pradeep Airee, Bhuwan Karki, Bibek Dali, Avinash Karn, Krishna Karki and Sagar Pun.

Four stand-by players for the event are Shiva Kumar Tandukar, Bibek Chaudhary, Amit Shrestha and Sameer Nepal.

The ACC U-19 Elite Cup is scheduled to be held in Thailand from February 1 to 10. Nepal is in Group B along with Afghanistan, Oman, UAE and Thailand for league matches.

Nepal is the four-time winner of the event. It missed the final for the first time in 10 years in the last edition losing to Afghanistan.

The event serves as the qualifiers for the ICC U-19 World Cup qualifiers to be participated by regional finalists.

Nepali team will travel to Sylhet, Bangladesh for three practice matches against Bangladesh U-19 team. The matches are scheduled for January 26, 27 and 29, according to CAN.

In a press conference organized to announce the team, CAN president Binaya Raj Pandey said that the selection procedure this year was different as the players performance during the training camp and practice matches were taken into accounts along with their performance in the national tournament.

Chief selector Bijaya Sharma hoped that the team would return victorious. “The team is strong,” he said. “It also defeated APF Club, which boosts national players and I believe this team can win the ACC U-19 Elite Cup.”

It was experience versus enthusiasm and Afghanistan used their experience at world level to recover twice during their innings to post 224 and used their bowling power to bowl out Nepal for merely 129 to win by huge margin of 95 runs.

Facing the pacers of Afghanistan proved impossible for Nepali batsmen as they lost wickets regularly. Only Sharad Vesawkar (35) and Gyanendra Malla (30) could make some runs.

Binod Das took three wickets while Paras Khadka and Rahul BK each took two wickets as Afghanistan´s formidable batting lineup struggled to make runs. Karim Sadiq topscored 58 while Raees Ahzamdi got 52. Mohd Nabi was out on 48.

After M Ashraf and Sadiq featured in 59-run partnership for fourth wicket while Nabi and Ahmadzi played well for 97-run partnership for seventh wicket. Nabi and Ahmadzi rescued the team from 114/6.

Mehboob Alam could not play due to injury on his foot and Binod replaced him, the only change in the team that played in the semifinal. Afghanistan played the same team from the semifinals against UAE.

In an attempt to lift the ACC Elite Cup Trophy for the first time, Nepal will take on tournament favorites Afghanistan in the final at Hubara Ground of Kuwait on Friday.

Afghanistan, with One-Day International (ODI) status and qualifiers for the ICC World Cup Twenty20, won the ACC Twenty20 five months ago and are a favorite to add one more feather to their cap.

However, Nepal have played with a cricketing sense and skills that were long due and are in every way capable of turning the tables on Afghanistan.

Also, Nepal need to level the field as the loss to Afghanistan in the semifinal of the World Cricket League Division 5 in Jersey in 2008 by 47 runs had pushed them on the backfoot of world cricket. The loss was one of three losses that Nepal suffered from Afghanistan — the other two being the third-place playoffs of 2006 and 2008 ACC Trophy.

The only time Nepal beat Afghanistan was in 2004 ACC Trophy but then Afghanistan was just a new entrant to world cricket and Nepal was already an experienced team.

But things are different this time in Kuwait. While Afghanistan narrowly escaped the first-round exit by defeating Malaysia by a run and lost to UAE; Nepal´s progress was steadily built on dynamic form of cricket.

Nepal beat Hong Kong, Oman, Singapore and Kuwait convincingly to enter the semifinal when it survived the Malaysian scare and the semifinal jinx to register an eight-run victory.

On Friday, both teams will be in their full strength as both vice-captains Gyanendra Malla of Nepal and Mohd Nabi of Afghanistan have reached and played well after visa hiccups.

Nabi, the best Afghan cricketer, was man of the match in the semifinal against Hong Kong which they won by 5 wickets.

From WCL Div 5 in Kathmandu, which Nepal won, Paras Khadka´s men are upbeat and playing a confident cricket. The captain, despite his poor form in Kuwait, would like to see the momentum carried on to make him the most successful captain.

Batting had come good as Anil Mandal and Mahesh Chhetri´s opening pair proving vital while middle-order led by Shakti Gauchan, Sharad Vesawkar and Gyanendra is on top form. Dipendra Chaudhary and Mehboob Alam are further down the order making it a strong batting lineup. Bowling had always been a strength of Nepali side.

The formidable batting lineup of Afghanistan and their speedy seamers along with noisy supporters, the final will be a dream contest and the team that plays a better cricket will emerge victorious.

Nepal vs Afghanistan

Total match played: 4 Afghanistan won: 3 Nepal won: 1

2008 WCL Div 5: Afghanistan 142 in 49.3 overs (M Nabi 48, Basant 3/30, Shakti 3/12, Binod 2/22) defeated Nepal 105 all out in 45.5 overs (Mehboob 17, Ahmadzai 3/18, M Nabi 2/15) by 37 runs.

2008 ACC Trophy: Nepal 210/8 (Kaniskha 43, Mahesh 29, Paras 22) lost to Afghanistan 213/7 in 48.2 overs (M Nabi 55, S Samiullah 51, Paras 3/34) by 3 wickets.

2006 ACC Trophy: Afghanistan 270/8 (M Nabi 60, K Sadiq 55, N Mangal 49, A Shah 46, Paras 3/36) defeated Nepal 115/5 in 33.4 overs (Shakti 42, Paras 33*, A Shah 3/33) by 64 runs under Duckworth-Lewis Method.

2004 ACC Trophy: Nepal 147 in 48.2 overs (Paras 34, Mehboob 33, Sharad 28, A Shah 5/14) defeated Afghanistan 100 in 41.2 overs (A Shah 30, N Mangal 28, Raj Kumar 4/21, Paras 2/8, Shakti 2/10) by 47 runs.

Nepal survived a spirited Malaysian run-chase to set a date with Afghanistan for the ACC Trophy Elite 2010 title with an eight-run victory at Hubara, Kuwait.

Nepal displayed some good batting performance to scored 271/6 in 50 overs. Malaysia reached within a touching distance of it, before falling out on 263 in 49.4 overs.

Suresh Navaratnam scored a century leading the run-chase but that was only enough to earn him man of the match award. The end-result meant the brilliant performance of the 1998 finalist came to an end.

Malaysia suffered an early blow losing opener Damith Warusavithana on the first ball of the innings and then Ahman Faiz the next over to Paras Khadka.

From 1/2, captain Suhan Kumar took the charge. He added 44 with veteran Rakesh Madhavan (7) and 82 with Navaratnam to repair the damage.

Both Madhavan and Kumar fell to off-spinner Sanjam Regmi, albeit in long distance. Kumar got 70 off 89 deliveries with six fours.

Shakti Gauchan and Rahuk BK took a wicket each as Malaysia went down to 127/3 to 146/6 and Nepal sensing the victory.

But Navaratnam and lower order had other thoughts. Hassan Ghulam got 19 off just 16 balls with two sixes before Basant Regmi undid him.

Wicket-keeper Shafiq Sharif was more aggressive hitting out 31 off 18 balls with five fours and his partnership with Navaratnam yielding 82 runs in no time.

Navaratnam played a few shots himself to reach the century but he was out a little earlier. Paras took his wicket when he was at 115 off 103 balls. He hit six four and three sixes in his praiseworthy knock.

In last over, Malaysia needed 14 for victory. Two runs later, Sharif was run out and Basant grabbed the last wicket to end the things in Nepal’s favor.

Earlier, Malaysia invited Nepal to bat first on the flat wickets. Anil Mandal (4) went early but Mahesh Chhetri and Shakti Gauchan partnered 87 runs for second wicket to build a foundation for big score.

Chhetri was out on 43 off 86 balls while Shakti completed his fourth half-century for the national team before S Yusof got rid of him. Shakti made 52 off 57 balls with four boundaries.

Captain Paras has been out-of-form in the event and that continued as he could only add couple of runs as Nepal went down to 120/4 from 98/1.

Vice-captain Gyanendra Malla and Sharad Vesawkar then did the wonders. While Gyanendra played a role of quiet partner, Sharad played with dominance and skills of a perfect batsman.

Sharad reached his half-century with a boundary while Gyanendra missed the landmark by a run after he was bowled by Navaratnam on 49 off 61 balls.

Sharad deserved a century but was three-runs short unbeaten when the match ended. Sharad’s 97 not out was made in 66 balls with 10 fours and a six. Dipendra Chaudhary contributed 14 runs.

This is the second instance Nepal has reached the final of the ACC Trophy. In 2002, it reached the final defeating Malaysia in the semifinal by 25 runs but lost to UAE in the title clash.

Nepal entered the semifinals of the ACC Trophy Elite 2010 as Oman’s beating of Kuwait ended the hosts’ chances at Unity, Kuwait.

Nepal has three wins with a game in hands against Kuwait on April 6, who has won only one. Oman and Hong Kong, with two wins each, are playing on same day to determine another team to qualify from the group.

This is third consecutive time that Nepal has qualified to semifinals of the Asia’s biggest event for non-Test playing nations. Nepal missed out semifinals in 2004 while it reached the final in 2002.

Nepal’s three wins came against defending champions Hong Kong (by 118 runs), Oman (by six wickets) and Singapore (by seven wickets).

Singapore lost all four matches and is relegated to ACC Trophy Challenge.

From Group B, Afghanistan and UAE are atop the table with two wins each but Malaysia, who had a game against UAE, could turn tables for one of them on net run rate with a thumping win.

GYANENDRA MALLA TO JOIN

Vice-captain Gyanendra Malla will join the team on Monday as he was granted visa by Kuwait after rejecting it twice.

“We talked with the Asian Cricket Council and the hosts and they assured us that he could play the rest of the matches,” said Tarak Mani Dixit, the secretary of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN).

Naresh Budhair had flown to Kuwait to replace Gyanendra but will not play.

The openers stood a 135-run partnership, the best ever partnership by Nepali batmen, as Nepal chased Singapore’s 216 with 40 balls remaining.

The match was one the most anticipated matches of the tournament for it was thought to the decider of supremacy of the two teams after crowd trouble helped Nepal progress to World Cricket League Division 4 at expense of Singapore.

With Singapore posting a good total, Nepal needed a solid batting performance for the victory. Anil and Mahesh ensured that the solidity came as early as possible hitting half-centuries.

They made better the 130-run fourth-wicket partnership between captain Paras Khadka and Sharad Vesawkar against Fiji at TU Ground earlier this year. The best opening stand was 125 held by Mehboob Alam and Paresh Lohani against Maldives at TU Ground in 2003.

They batted 26.5 overs to ensure an impressive win. Anil, who hit his second half-century in his fifth match, got 83 off 93 balls with seven fours and a six. Man of the match Mahesh scored 87 off 111 deliveries with eight boundaries. The scores were individual best for both of them.

Paras got out in 8 in 13 balls with a four but Sharad Vesawkar (18 off 38 balls) and Dipendra Chaudhary (9 off 6 balls with two fours) completed the formality. Saad Janjua, Pramodh Raja and Philips Childs took a wicket each for Singapore.

Earlier, Singapore won the toss and elected to bat first. They started well with Chetan Suryawanshi and Buddhika Mendis adding 66 runs for first wicket. Nepali pacers – Mehboob Alam, Amrit Bhattarai and Paras – failed to get any breakthrough.

Basant Regmi gave the breakthrough as Suryawanshi gave a catch to Amrit at 32 in 15th over. Although spinners tightened the screw on scoring, they found it hard to get wicket.

Mendis made 36 off 72 balls before running himself out. Munish Arora (31 off 55) and Childs (40 off 55) continued the batting domination as Singapore raced to 143/3 in 34 overs. Nepali bowlers and fielders worked hard to get four wickets for 25 runs in next seven overs.

Janjua (29 off 22) and Dharmichand Mulewa (17 off 17) got some runs under pressure but the acceleration attempts resulted in run-outs and the innings ended at 216 in 49 overs.

The result of the match ended Singapore’s chances of proceeding as it was their third loss. With third win in as many matches, Nepal now is at the top of the table. A series of unfavorable results, including a loss against Kuwait on April 6, could only put Nepal out of semifinals.

Oman scored 169/9 in 50 overs after electing to bat first. Nepal needed 38.3 overs to overcome the score and lost four wickets.

Anil Mandal and Mahesh Chhetri once again provided a solid opening partnership adding 63 runs. Anil, who had scored 72 two days earlier against Hong Kong, was caught behind at 39 off Aamir Ali.

Anil played 45 balls and his seven fours in his innings.

Mahesh made 35 off 69 with four boundaries before becoming the second victim for Ali.

A run-a-ball 53-run partnership came from Basant Regmi, who was elevated in the batting order, and captain Paras Khadka.

Paras was run out at 29 off 28 balls with six fours. Basant made 29 off 32 with five fours before falling at 135. Ali completed three wickets.

Sharad Vesawkar (22 not out off 31) and Dipendra Chaudhary (14 not out off 26) completed the victory for Nepal with 11.3 overs remaining.

Earlier, opening pacers Mehboob Alam and Amrit Bhattarai, who replaced Binod Das, took a wicket each to put Oman on backfoot at 4/2.

A half-century from Vaibhav Wategaonkar and handy contributions from Adnan Ilyas (22), Sultan Ahmed (20) and Ali (24) helped their score.

Wategaonkar scored 56 off 104 balls with four boundaries. Rahul BK was pick of the bowlers taking three wickets (3/32) while Shakti Gauchan grabbed two. Sanjam Regmi got one.

Paras Khadka was named man of the match for his 29 runs and a wicket. He also held two catches.
