Nepal is drawn with defending champions and hosts Australia, 1998-winner England and Ireland in Group A for the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2012.

“The event will get underway in Queensland exactly one year from today and Scotland will be there as the leading Associate after winning eight of its nine matches during the qualifiers, which took place in Dublin and Derry,” International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a release.

Group B is made up of the last event’s runner-up and two-time winner Pakistan, New Zealand, Scotland and Afghanistan while 2000 and 2008 champion India has been drawn in Group C along with West Indies, Zimbabwe and PNG.

Sri Lanka, South Africa, Bangladesh and Namibia make up Group D.

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said: “The ICC U19 Cricket World Cup is a very important tournament for us and I want to congratulate those six teams who have qualified to take part in Queensland next year.”

“This tournament has proved to be an important stepping stone for elite young cricketers aspiring to play international cricket. It’s an opportunity for them to develop and test their skills in a high-pressure situation against the world’s best at this level.

“We also use it as an opportunity to educate them on several important issues like anti-corruption, anti-doping and social responsibility expected of international cricketers while also exposing them to the ICC Code of Conduct and media attention.

“In the past, we have seen some quality players come through the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, including star players like Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yuvraj Singh, Brian Lara, Ian Bell, Virat Kohli, Eoin Morgan, Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla. I expect next year’s event to be no different in producing future world stars.”

Cricket Australia (CA) and the Queensland Government announced that Queensland will host the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2012.

The partnership between the International Cricket Council (ICC), CA, Queensland Cricket and Events Queensland will see Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Townsville hosting teams from around the globe in August next year, with Australia, as current defending champion, aiming to go back-to-back on home soil.

Nepal is one of the qualifiers to participate in the event.

It will be the second time the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup has been held in Australia, after the inaugural event in 1988, and will showcase the world’s best emerging players, broadcasting their talents around the globe to millions of television viewers in India, England, New Zealand and South Africa amongst many others via ESPN STAR Sports.

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said everyone was looking forward to seeing the exciting young talent on show and was very pleased to have the support of Events Queensland.

“The ICC U19 Cricket World Cup is the showcase event for best young cricketers in the world and is where the next Cameron White or Yuvraj Singh gets their first real taste of top-level international cricket,” Mr Sutherland said.

“It was only a couple of years ago we saw Mitch Marsh captain the Australia Under-19 team to victory in New Zealand with talents such as Josh Hazlewood, Alister McDermott and Alex Keath alongside him.

“We are very grateful to Queensland Cricket and Events Queensland for their support in hosting this tournament and I think all the teams and supporters will enjoy their time in Australia’s sunshine state.

“We are building towards hosting the senior ICC Cricket World Cup in 2015 and this tournament will play a big part in getting ready for that event,” he said.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said: “This is great news for Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Townsville because it will bring the best young cricketers in the world here to play locally.

“This is a first for Queensland and it’s the only the second time Australia has hosted the competition – the last time being in 1988 in Melbourne and Adelaide.

“This event will deliver an economic shot in the arm to the host communities and showcase Queensland to the world – attracting 400 players and officials from 16 countries and generating an expected 7000 bed nights for the local tourism industry.

“In addition, it will be televised into the homes of cricket fans in more than 100 countries including in Asia, the UK and South Africa via ESPN STAR Sports.”

Queensland Sports Minister Phil Reeves said the event had also previously been held in countries including New Zealand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and South Africa.

“This is a truly international event that further cements Queensland’s status as the sporting events capital of Australia,” Mr Reeves said.

“It’s particularly exciting to be hosting it in 2012 because Australia is the current defending champion after winning the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand in 2010.

“Having this event here in Queensland as the chosen location in Australia next year is a vote of confidence in our ability to host major sporting events of international significance.”

Ms Bligh and Mr Reeves thanked the ICC, Cricket Australia, Queensland Cricket and Events Queensland for their partnership which had delivered the event to Queensland.

Queensland Cricket Chief Executive Officer Graham Dixon said Queensland Cricket was looking forward to hosting the tournament.

“Queensland Cricket is thrilled at the decision to bring the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup to our state, and especially with the decision to play in two important regional centres, Townsville and the Sunshine Coast, with the resulting positive economic impact on those areas,” he said.

“The support of the State Government and the Events Queensland will enable Queensland to provide an international showcase around this tournament, which has grown into a significant event on the world cricket stage.

“Queensland Cricket is acutely aware that the ICC Cricket World Cup will be staged in Australia and New Zealand in 2015 and so tournaments like the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup are an important proving ground for us, and for Cricket Australia, as it gets closer to hosting that major event,” he said.

“The support of government at all levels will be a vital part of our collective preparations for 2015, but I know that Queensland Cricket is looking forward to working closely with all of our stakeholders to make the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup a memorable and successful event.”

The 2012 tournament will be the ninth ICC U19 Cricket World Cup after the inaugural event was held in Australia in 1988.

Australia has won the event on three occasions, taking home the inaugural title in 1988, then again in 2002 and most recently in 2010 at the last event held in New Zealand.

Team Nepal left Kathmandu on Sunday for the U-19 World Cup qualifiers campaign.

Nepali U-19 is scheduled to participate in the ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifiers in Ireland from July 28 to August 9.

The top six teams after round-robin league in the 10-nation event will qualify for 2012 U-19 Cricket World Cup in Australia.

Top two teams from each cricketing region of International Cricket Council (ICC) are participating in the event. Nepal qualified as the runners-up from Asia along with ACC U-19 Elite Cup winners Afghanistan.

Nepal will take on Afghanistan on July 28 in the inaugural match. Other opponents include Scotland (July 29), Kenya (July 31), Vanuatu (August 1), Canada (August 3), Namibia (August 5), Ireland (August 6), Papua New Guinea (August 7) and USA (August 9).

The team is led Prithu Baskota.

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) bade farewell to the team amidst a program at the National Sports Council (NSC).

“We are expecting to finish within top two. So far as I’m concerned qualification for the U-19 World Cup is probably not a tough task for this team,” said CAN President Binay Raj Pandey.

Pandey asked players to give their 100 percent during the matches.

“We have a dream of playing Cricket World Cup at senior level. Obviously, a team that includes experienced players and youths can give us the success. You have to give your 100 percent now to fulfil the dream,” said Pandey.

NSC member secretary Yubaraj Lama said that success of a nation depends on the performance of individual during the game.

“You have responsibilities on your shoulders and show your sincerity during the tournament. You are ambassador of the country through the sport and maintain your discipline,” said Lama.

“I’m hopeful you will return home with good results,” he added.

Baskota expressed their confidence of doing well in the tournament before leaving for Ireland. He said that they would secure World Cup berth first and fight for the trophy in Ireland.

Teenage cricketer Prithu Baskota, who made his national team debut in the 16th Asian Games, is the captain of Nepali U-19 team for the upcoming ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifiers. Baskota is the only player to lead Nepal in all age groups.

Nepali U-15 team won the ACC U-15 Elite Cup in 2006 in Malaysia under the leadership of Baskota. He, then, led Nepali team to win the ACC U-17 Elite Cup in 2009 in Kathmandu. Baskota was the vice-captain of the Nepali team that participated in the ACC U-19 Elite Cup 2009 in Kuwait, where Nepal could not reach the final for the first time in 10 years and missed the chance to play World Cup Qualifiers.

However, Nepali team reached the final of ACC U-19 Elite Cup held in Thailand earlier this year and secured its chance to play ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifiers, scheduled to be held in Ireland from July 28 to August 9. Nepali team, which spent a month and a half in closed camp training, will leave Kathmandu on Sunday. Top six teams of the ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifiers will secure berth in the U-19 World Cup scheduled to be held in Australia in 2012 and the Nepali youths are targeting one of the spots.

How was the closed camp training?

The training was good. We were in the closed camp training for a month and a half and we improved with every passing day. We are physically and mentally stonger after the training. We worked to improve in every departments of the game. Meanwhile, we know that the wickets in Ireland will be fast unlike slow wickets of Nepal and we are training to adjust with this during the game.

Will it be that easy to adjust in the conditions of Ireland?

It could have been better if we had reached Ireland earlier than our scheduled time but I´m confident we´ll adjust. We were trying to play quick shots on bowling machine expecting bouncy wickets in Ireland.

What would you say about Nepali U-19 team?

I think the current Nepali team is more balnaced than the team that took part in the ACC U-19 Elite Cup in Thailand. We have a medium pacer, a spinner and a batsmen added in the squad and it has enhanced our bench strength.

What are the strength and weakness of your team?

Spin attack is our most significant strength and we are good in fielding. Overall, we have a balanced team. I don´t see any particular weakness but I would like to say we are improving every day in all departments of the game.

How do you rate your opponents in the Qualifiers?

So far as I´m concerned, Afghanistan could be the toughest for us. European teams – Scotland and Ireland – might be the other tough challengers. We do not know much about other teams and keeping this fact in mind, we´ll take every match seriously.

If so, what is the target of the Nepali team?

We want to qualify for the World Cup. This World Cup could be the last U-19 tournament for many players in the squad if we qualify. We all have a dream of playing the World Cup and I´m hopeful we´ll achieve success.

How desperate are you for playing the World Cup?

In our team, only Rahul dai (Rahul BK) has World Cup experience. And, I already told you that we want to play the World Cup.

Ireland coach Jeremy Bray, in an interview on the eve of the ICC U-19 World Cup qualifiers, said: Nepal has a strong culture.

Not only the host of the event Ireland but most of the participating nations have naturally taken Nepal as a strong team for the past performance in the U-19 World Cups.

For Nepali team, who hope to rejoin the U-19 World Cup finishing top six in the 10-team event, the problems is the weather and the opening match against the regional competitor, Afghanistan.

“We have best available players for the team,” coach Jagat Tamata said. “Our first aim is to qualify for the World Cup.”

Nepal qualified to compete in the U-19 World Cups five times between 2000 to 2008 before missing it last time.

“Mentally the players are ready, and they are enthusiastic,” Tamata said during a training session in Kathmandu. Nepal’s training was marred by continuous rainfall.

Nepal, Afhganistan, Ireland, Scotland, Kenya, Namibia, USA, Canada, Papua New Guinea and Vanatu are competing in the qualifiers, possibly the last global qualifiers as International Cricket Council (ICC) already indicating that from next edition, teams will qualify directly from regional qualifiers.

Nepal missed the global qualifiers last time losing to Afghanistan in semifinals of 2009 ACC U-19 Elite Cup in Kuwait. In February this year, Nepal ensured a spot reaching the final of the ACC U-19 Elite Cup in Thailand before losing to Afghanistan in the title-clash.

Nepal is playing Afghanistan in the first match in Ireland but coach Tamata is confident that the team has capacity to beat them. “During the final of the ACC U-19, the two teams were equal, we lost only because poor field setting,” he said.

In the opening match of the ACC U-19, Nepal beat Afghanistan in the league round.

Ireland’s cold temperature is a headache for Nepal which is using early morning time for physical exercise. “Cold weather is a challenge as spinnes will have difficulties gripping the ball,” he said.

Nepali team consists of seven batsmen, two all-rounders and five bowlers. “Spin is our main weapon, and we have two left-arm spinner and a right-hand spinner,” he added.

Rahul BK and Bhuwan Karki are the left-arm spinners while captain Prithu Baskota who missed the ACC U-19 final due to injury, is utility spinner. Rahul, also a regular of national team, was chosen the best bowler in ACC event for his 21-wicket haul.

Nepal is scheduled to play Namibia in a practice match on July 26.

Nepal Team: Prithu Baskota (captain), Pradeep Airee, Naresh B. Budhaayer, Bhuban Karki, Krishna Karki, Avinash Karn, Subash P. Khakurel, Nischal Pandey, Shubhendu Pandey, Rajesh Pulami Magar, Sagar Pun, Fajlur Rahman, Rupesh K. Shrivastav, Rahul K. Vishwakarma

International Cricket Council (ICC) has prohibited selection of two Nepali under-19 players in any national teams as a bowler for the suspect bowling action, a senior cricket official confirmed on Monday.

“ICC sent us a correspondence reporting the suspect action of Sagar Khadka and Rahul Biswokarma,” Tanka Paneru, the general secretary of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) informed.

The ICC has directed CAN not to select them without ensuring remedial works. The ICC letter reads: “Please ensure that the analysis and any remedial work are carried out on these bowlers prior to any further selection as a bowler to any of your national team.”

The two spinners from Region No 4 Bhairahawa were part of the Nepali team that reached the plate final of the Youth World Cup held in Malaysia in February. As one of the key players of the team, Rahul took 10 wickets and scored 51 runs in six matches while Sagar took two wickets and scored 47 runs in as many matches.

“I have not been informed about this,” Rahul, considered a player for watch, said over telephone. “I don’t think my bowling action is suspicious and if there is any shortcoming, I can improve on that.”

According to Paneru, CAN will decide on further steps only after the ongoing Springwood National League Cricket Tournament. This also means that both reported players, playing for their regional team in the national league, can continue playing in the event.

Nepal is scheduled to play two important international events this year – the World Cricket League Division 5 in May in Jersey and the ACC Elite Trophy in July. Both can not be considered for the selection of these events.

The players reported for suspect action have to go through the action correction and only after scientific analysis of the improved bowling action is found to be okay, the players can compete in the international level.

West Indies bowlers dished out hostile bowling reminiscent of their glorious predecessors to hammer Nepal by seven wickets in the Plate Championship final of the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup at the Bayuemas Oval on Saturday.

The pace attack led by man-of-the-match Jason Dawes, who took four wickets, utilized the early freshness of the pitch to bowl Nepal out for mere 74 runs in 25.3 overs in the rain shortened 27-overs match. The Caribbean batsmen then reached the modest target in just 14.2 overs losing three wickets to take the Plate title away from defending champion.

Nepal’s decision to go with its usual formula of putting up a score and defending it by suffocating the opposition batsmen misfired as the pitch covered for the best part of three days due to persistent rain had life on it and the West Indies bowlers utilized it to the hilt.

“It’s only a 54-over game and the wicket doesn’t change that much in the second innings,” Nepali coach Roy Dias defended the decision. But his West Indies counterpart begged to differ.
“I was a bit surprised by their decision to bat first,” former West Indies Test player Larry Gomes exclaimed. “There was plenty of life in the wicket and the bowlers exploited it.”

Captain Paras Khadka too believed it was a right decision. “We had to go with our strength. We wanted to put around 120 on the board batting first,” skipper Paras Khadka said indicating to Nepal’s dismal performance while chasing.

The team gambled by sending Gyanendra Malla in to open with wicket keeper Mahesh Chhetri in place of Anil Mandal but Mahesh got out in the third ball of the first over.

Anil Mandal then edged down the leg side to keeper Devon Thomas in the last ball of the second over to make it 4/2.

Gyanendra, who had failed in the tournament coming, looked to be in good touch middling a few balls and even hit an exquisite flick to the square leg boundary but got a peach of a ball from Dawes that moved out to square him up for an edge to first slip.

Rom Shrestha then got a rough decision to be adjudged caught down the leg side reducing Nepal to 17/4. “We lost four wickets early as the boys were facing this pace for the first time,” Dias said.

Paras tried to counterattack hitting a couple of fours but once he fell to a diving catch in slips for 12, Nepal looked down and out. Sagar Khadka played valiantly taking up a nasty blow on his chest and made unbeaten 17 off 55 balls to topscore as none of the other batsmen could reach double figures.

Raj Shrestha also apparently got a rough decision but it was a disappointing batting performance. The total was largely contributed by 18 extras.

West Indies looked to be in a hurry while chasing the lowly target and both their openers were lucky to survive confident caught behind appeals of left-arm pacer Amrit Bhattarai. Kieron Powell made a quick-fire 24 off 16 balls including a towering sixer off Paras before edging Amrit at first slip while the other opener Adrien Barath got 15 before falling to Rahul BK.

Paras also had a confident caught behind appeal turned down against Barath. Amrit got another wicket as Darren Bravo finished Nepal off with a typically aggressive innings of 24 from 15 deliveries laced with three fours and a straight six.

“May be things could have been different. But to be frank 75 was simply not enough,” Paras reflected on the rough umpiring decisions.

“We wanted to win this title as we came from a tough group that included India and South Africa who have both reached final,” the victorious captain Shamarh Brooks said praising Amrit for his bowling. “He is one for the future.” The Nepali team will reach Kathmandu on Sunday.

Captain Paras Khadka inspired Nepal to a thrilling four-run win over Namibia in the Plate Championship semifinal of the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup at the Johor Cricket Academy ground on Tuesday.

The lanky all-rounder topscored with 44 after winning the toss to take Nepal to a challenging score of 143/8 in the rain curtailed 34-overs match and then took two wickets apart from affecting a run out with a direct hit to condemn Namibia to a narrow loss.

He braved nausea in the later part of the second innings to marshal his troops rattled by Namibian assault and also bowled the crucial 32nd and 34th overs to take defending champion Nepal to the final. “Paras captained the team very well and handled the bowlers exceptionally under pressure,” Nepali coach Roy Dias lauded his skipper.

Chasing 144, Namibia made a cautious start under a light drizzle and made just seven runs in the first five overs. The openers then tried to hit out and were dismissed by Amrit Bhattarai and Paras to be reduced to 17/2. “We batted very slowly in the beginning and failed to get the early momentum,” Namibian coach Louis Foster said.

Nepal looked to be cruising to victory with the Namibians making just 22 runs in the 10 overs but captain LP van der Westhuizen, filling in for regular skipper Dawid Botha, who went back home for his university exams, had other intentions and flayed Nepali bowlers all around the park to put Nepal under tremendous pressure.

The Nepali fielders buckled under the assault and conceded runs due to poor ground fielding. “Our ground fielding was pathetic. We gave 20-30 runs and could have lost due to it,” Paras conceded.

The southpaw, who had also topscored with a polished 65 in the group match against Nepal, played a swashbuckling innings of 33 off just 28 balls including three fours and a towering six over midwicket off Raj Shrestha and added 50 runs for the third wicket with No 3 Raymond van Schoor.

He then played across the line and missed a full toss from Sagar Khadka to be dismissed lbw but van Schoor kept on batting intelligently to keep Namibia in the hunt until the end. “I felt good in the middle but I missed a full toss,” Westhuizen rued.
Namibia needed 28 runs from the last three overs with four wickets remaining and got 10 runs from an over of off-spin bowled by Paras. Left-arm spinner Rahul BK then took two wickets conceding three runs in the penultimate over to swing the pendulum decisively into Nepal’s favor.

Schoor lofted Paras to deep mid-wicket off the third ball of the last over but Anil Mandal took a good running catch as Namibia was left to score 13 runs off the last three balls. Schoor topscord with 48 off 73 balls.

Geri Jan Coetzee hit the last ball for a straight six but Namibia still lost by four runs to suffer yet another narrow defeat against Nepal following the three-run loss in the group game. Apart from Paras and Rahul, Raj also took a couple of wickets.

Earlier, Paras anchored Nepali innings before getting out in the 33rd over to give respectability to the total after the match started three hours behind schedule owing to persistent rain.

He made 44 off 63 with three fours and added vital 43 runs for the third wicket with opener Anil Mandal after yet another failure for Gyanendra Malla. Anil got three lives in his 54-ball 23 and looked to be getting into the rhythm before he was run out when Paras sent him back after calling for a single initially. Opener Mahesh Chhetri also got a life before being dismissed for nine.

“We gave too many extras and dropped a few catches though our ground fielding was good,” Namibian coach Foster said pointing toward the 21 extras that included 17 wides. Rom Shrestha then made 18 runs off 22 balls with a six and added crucial 27 runs with Paras to lift Nepali run rate above four. Sean Silver took three wickets while Keady Strauss got two for the losing side.

Nepal now plays the winner of Wednesday’s match between West Indies and Papua New Guinea in the final slated for Saturday.
