With the regional award, ACC has nominated Pandey for the ICC Lifetime Achievement Award which will be announced on February 28 in Dubai from among the regional winners of five ICC Development Regions.

This is the second time, a Nepali has been honored with the award. Jai Kumar Nath Shah won the award in 2003 and he went to win the ICC Global Award for the Lifetime Service.

“This is an honor to Nepali cricket, I am only an actor,” Pandey said. “This honor is for the country.”

Pandey also said that ACC evaluated his honesty for cricket. “This is a big honor for me, for my honesty for developing cricket in Nepal.”

Pandey is associated with CAN for four decades now. He is serving as the president for three years now after serving it as the general secretary for more than three decades.

During ICC’s Centenary Year celebration in 2009, Pandey and four other cricket officials received the ICC Centenary Award.

Along with Pandey, Nepal also received ACC award for Best Junior Cricket Initiative while Malaysia won three regional awards for Best Cricket Promotion and Marketing Program, Photo of the Year and Volunteer of the Year for Mohammad Sham Bin Jalil.

ACC Best Photo of the Year 2010.
Qatar and Bhutan won regional awards for the best Overall Cricket Development Program and the best Women’s Cricket Initiative respectively.

Last time Nepal won the regional award was in 2007 when Sudarshan Ranjit won the Best Photo Award and CAN won the Best Junior Cricket Initiative Award. In 2006, Nepal’s Region no 5 Nepalgunj won the Best Women’s Cricket Initiative Award that later also won the ICC Global Award.

In 2003, along with Shah, Nepal won the Best Cricket Promotion and Marketing Program Award.

The Pepsi ICC Development Programme Awards, now in its ninth year, recognizes and rewards the efforts of Associations and individuals who promote cricket in their countries.

“It was difficult to select the Asian winners this year since there were so many to choose from. There was very close competition but we really do appreciate the entries and I would like to wish all Associations the very best as they go forward into the global reckoning,” said ACC Development Manager Bandula Warnapura in the official website of the ACC.

Avinash took seven wickets as Birgunj bowled out Bhairahawa for 74 runs in 22.4 overs after scoring 110 in 35.3 overs in the final.

Electing to bat first, Birgunj, the unbeaten team in the round-robin league could only manage 110. Chandan Jha topscored with 47 runs off 93 balls with three fours. He and opener Chakra Prakash (21 off 55) were only two batsmen to score in double-digit and shared a 30-run partnership – the highest of the innings.

Satish Bhagat was pick of the bowler with 3/15 while Sushan Bari grabbed two wickets. Nabin Shrestha, Devendra Somare and Bibek Chaudhary each returned with a wicket.

Bhairahawa were probably looking for a revenge of the 10-wicket loss in the league but Birgunj proved that they did not bowl out them for 59 in that match on a fluke.

Bhairahawa managed to score better getting 74 but that was not enough. Only three batsmen – Kasam Thapa (17), Prakash KC (11) and Satish (10) – got double digit.

Avinash picked with 7 wickets in his 8 overs giving away 19 runs. Rajeev Shah picked up two and Gopal Singh got one wicket to end Bhairahawa’s dream.

It was Birgunj’s second title in the age-group national league after winning U-19 in March.

Hari Chaulagain, the captain of Biratnagar, was adjudged best bowler of the event for his 12 wickets while Nepalgunj’s captain Washim Halwai took the award for best batsman for scoring 138 runs in five matches.

Chief Guest Minister for Youth and Sports Ganesh Tiwari Nepali gave away the prizes in the closing ceremony that was attended by ministry secretary Sushil Narsing J B Rana, Cricket Association of Nepal president Binaya Raj Pandey, CAN vice-presidents Upendra Prasad Bhattarai and Ramesh Silwal, CAN secretary Tarak Mani Dixit, CAN members Santosh Mardan Thapa, Arun Satyal, Binod Raj Rajbhandari, hosts Region NO 3 secretary Bijay Kumar Sharma, hosting committee member Naresh Rana and sponsor Arose Sthapit.

National Team scored 193/9 in 40 overs – thanks to Shakti Gauchan’s 82 after Paras Khadka chose to bat first. In reply, U-21 Team was bowled out for 103 in 30 overs.

The highlights of National Team’s innings were Shakti’s knock and Chandra Saud’s bowling figure. While Shakti made 82 off 116 balls with five boundaries and featured in a 60-run partnership with Dipendra Chaudhary, Chandra took 5/49.

Dipendra scored 29 off 39 balls while other contribution came from Sharad Vesawkar (18), Paras (14) and Sagar Pun (12). U-21 Team also gave away 23 extras – 13 alone by Chandra.

Nischal Pandey emereged hero of the victory with an all-round performance while in the other dead-match, Region No 5 Nepalgunj defeated Region No 1 Biratnagar by three wickets.

With the results, Bhairahawa qualified for the final against Region No 2 Birgunj while once super-weight of Nepali cricket Biratnagar lost all five matches.

At BSAM Ground, Kathmandu’s decision to bat first hit back dearly as Navin Shrestha and Nischal bowled their hearts out to end the innings at 66 in 27 overs. Nischal took five wickets giving away 11 runs in 8 overs while Navin grabbed three for 28 runs in 7 overs.

For Kathmandu, only three batsmen reached double-digit – Dilman Rokka (19), Nupur Pandey (10) and Roshan Khatri (15) while six batsmen did not score.

Bijaya Rokaya trapped Swichan Shah on the first ball while Bhairahawa began the chase but 42-run partnership between Satish Bhagat (9) and Nischal put the foundation to complete the victory in 13.3 overs.

Kiran Pandey (16 not out of 10 balls) and Nischal won the match for Bhairahawa. Nischal remained unbeaten on run-a-ball 37 with five fours.

At IOE Ground, Biratnagar did better than Kathmandu after choosing to bat first. With captain Hari Chaulagain topscoring along with Lilan Kharel (18) and Rimesh Regmi (14) took them to 109 in 22.3 overs. Hari scored 32 off 29 balls with five fours.

Opening seamer Saud Ahmad Ansari took six wickets for 14 runs while Karamat Khan took three wickets.

Nepalgunj faced hardtimes chasing the score but they managed to register victory in 29 overs with three wickets remaining. Opener Prajwal Shahi got 31 off 79 balls while Rupal Nepali (13) and Greethi Rokka (12) contributed.

Sumit Chandra Dev (3/18) and Lilan (2/21) were picks of Biratnagar bowlers. Ansari took man of the match award.

On January 12, Birgunj plays Kathmandu at BSAM Ground while Nepalgunj meets Region No 6 Baitadi in the battle of far-west at IOE Ground in the last matches of league.
