Nepal’s Dream Debut at World T20

Nepal began its ICC World T20 campaign in a fairytale mode with a resounding 80-run win over Hong Kong, in the event that began on Sunday, at the  Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong.

Good batting, followed by brilliant bowling display from the Nepali team avenged the 10-wicket defeat suffered during the World Cup Qualifiers in January in New Zealand.

Put in to bat first, after losing the toss, Nepal posted a competitive target of 150 runs and bowled out Hong Kong for 69 runs with three overs to spare.

Vice captain Gyanendra Malla and captain Paras Khadka showed sparks with the bat and later Paras took the key wicket of Hong Kong opener Irfan Ahmed in the very first ball of the innings. Left arm spinner Shakti Gauchan, man-of-the-match, claimed three wickets in his miserly 4-over spell, where he gave away 9 runs. Basanta Regmi pocketed three wickets as well.

‘The openers gave us the solid start and bowlers, especially, Shakti and Basanta, fulfilled their duty perfectly at right time. “This is all due to amazing team effort,” skipper Paras said at the post match conference. “It’s Holi, the festival of colors back home today and its our gift to the nation,” shared Paras.

Unlike in warm-up matches, Nepali openers Subash Khakurel (22) and Sagar Pun (13) came up with a partnership of 36 runs for the first wicket before Sagar was caught by Waqas Barkat. Subash too failed to contribute to the total of 36 handing over the batting responsibility to Gyanendra and Paras. In the power play, Nepal had managed to score 44 runs for the fall of two wickets.

Gyanendra scored the highest 48 runs and Paras contributed 41 runs. The duo shared 80 run stand for the third wicket.

Paras smashed four fours in his knock of 37 balls before he was caught in 16.2 over at the long-on by Nizakat Khan off Najeeb Amar. Gyanendra cracked a six and four fours in his knock of 41- balls before being caught and bowled by Haseeb Amjad.

Soon after Paras scored his 14 runs in the match, he also became the first player from Nepal to reach 500 runs in T20 (recognized by ICC).

Sharad Vesawkar contributed 14 runs. Nepal that lost four wickets in the last over with three batsmen being out for duck. Haseeb Amjad claimed three wickets for Hong Kong followed by two wickets of Nadeem Ahmed.

Hong Kong received an early blow in its run chase, when its reliable opener Irfan Ahmed was caught behind by Subash Khakurel off Paras in the very first ball. Hong  Kong woes increased in the last ball of second over when its skipper Jamie Atkinson was bowled.

Basanta and Shakti dashed Hong Kong’s hope further after they claimed two wickets apiece in the 11th and 12th over respectively. Basanta  conceded 14 runs in his four overs.

Hong Kong’s opener Waqas Barkat (18), Babar Hayat (20) and Mark Chapman (13) were the only batsmen to reach double digits. Four Hong Kong batsmen were out for without scoring. Haseeb Amjad remained unbeaten on four runs.

Hong Kong’s captain Jamie Atkinson opined that batting failure cost his side dearly. “Batting failure cost us and it was best game for us and Nepal as well. Nepal is good side and proved good today.”

All set for the Big Day

I arrived this morning at Chittagong, the Port City of Bangladesh to watch and Cover ICC World T20. Nepal qualified for the highest level of competitive cricket after defeating Hong Kong in the World T20 Qualifiers played in November, 2013. The win itself was miraculous, as Nepal beat Hong Kong in a thrilling match that went up to the last ball.

Chittagong, which is around 250 kilometers east from capital city Dhaka, is comparatively calm, less crowded than the Bangladeshi capital. After escaping from infamous traffic jam of Dhaka, my focus turned to cricket. Nepal has to play against Hong Kong in the opening group match of the T20 World Cup on Sunday. Stage is all set for the both the teams for a do or die match. Other two teams in the group – Bangladesh, host and test playing nation – and Afghanistan which is emerging as a cricket power house among non test-playing nations are being touted as one of the favorite team to go to the next round. But in T20 cricket anything can happen.

I arrived at 1 pm ZACS ( Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Cricket Stadium) to collect my accreditation card and attend press meet of both the captains. But due to heavy traffic and confusion between football and cricket stadium, and of course our lack of knowledge of local language, we – me and other sports journalists from Nepal – missed the media briefing. But after persuading ICC media manager Bridget, she allowed us to ask few questions to Nepal skipper Paras Khadka.

Paras seemed calm as ever and not affected by the poor performance in the practice matches. It’s perfectly logical for a skipper to show confidence before high octane match in the mega event. Couldn’t ask what Hong Kong skipper had to say, but I expected it on obvious lines, like – we are playing great cricket, we have defeated Zimbabwe and The Netherlands in practice matches, our boys are playing great cricket and they are in good form, blah..blah…blah.

Nepal has previously defeated Hong Kong time and again but statistics don’t play in the field, you have play better than your opponent to win match.  T20 is a format where 3-4 overs can change the outcome of the game.

Poor performance by opening pair and inability to play good fast bowling has been Nepal’s headache for long. This will still be a big question mark here again, and this can oust Nepal from the tournament very early. Another thing that goes against Nepal is that it has not a single charismatic player (batsman, bowler or all-rounder) who can single handedly win the match for his team. Hong Kong has Irfan Ahmed, an explosive opener and a good bowler. This can be the difference between Nepal and Hong Kong. Nepal needs to have strategy to contain Irfan Ahmed, the batsman, and strengthen its batting performance against Irfan Ahmed, the bowler. Both these associate nations are playing big league cricket for the first time, so it would be interesting to see who stays calm enough and plays to potential.

Coach of Nepali cricket team Pubudu Dassanayake has said time and again that T20 is anybody’s game, so don’t write us off, we can stage upset and go to second round. I want to believe Dassanayake’s confidence will be proven right. Hopefully, along with me, other Nepali fans would be rooting the same line.

Second loss for Nepal

Nepal suffered another defeat in its second and final warm up match of the ICC World T20 at the Fatullah Stadium, in Fatullah, Dhaka. UAE defeated Nepal by 6 wickets, chasing a target of 96.

Defending a smallish target, Nepali bowlers began well, as Amjad Ali was trapped leg before in the very first over off Paras Khadka. UAE lost its second wicket with score at 14 runs and third at 34. But for UAE, the overhaul of the target was always going to be one good partnership away. And that partnership came in when Swapnil Patil (40) came in after the fall of Khurram Khan (15). He forged a 48-run partnership for the 4th wicket in 8.4 overs with Shaiman Anwar (30*) and took UAE to safety.

For Nepal, Paras Khadka, Sompal Kami, Shakti Gauchan and Basanta Regmi took one wicket each.

Preliminary squad for World T20

Cricket Association of Nepal has finalized a 30-member preliminary squad, including veteran off-spinner Sanjam Regmi, another spinner Rahul BK, fast bowlers Amrit Bhattarai and Chandra Saud, for the upcoming ICC World T20.

The biggest tournament of T20 format will begin in Bangladesh on March 16. Nepal qualified for the mega event after finishing third in the ICC World T20 qualifiers held in the UAE in November.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) had set the deadline of January 16 for the registration of the preliminary squad. Cricket Nepal learnt that it had sent the list to the world cricket governing body ahead of the deadline.

The players were selected on the recommendation of coach Pubudu Dassanayake while he was in New Zealand for the ODI World Cup Qualifiers, where Nepal faltered and finished ninth in the tournament, after 5 losses and a consolation win.

Despite their poor performance in New Zealand, all of the 15 players have retained their place in the preliminary squad.

Captain Paras Khadka, vice captain Gyanendra Malla, Subash Khakurel, Anil Mandal, Pradeep Airee, Sharad Vesawkar, Prithu Baskota, Binod Bhandari, Sagar Pun, Basanta Regmi, Shakti Gauchan, Jitendra Mukhiya, Sompal Kami, Avinash Karn and Mahesh Chhetri are the 15 players in the current more info

national team. Subash did not play any match in New Zealand because of illness.

Other players who were named in the preliminary squad are Ram Naresh Giri, Naresh Budhaair, Bhuvan Karki, Rajesh Pulami, Yagyaman Kumal, Aarif Sheikh, Sushil Kandel, Amrit Shrestha, Rajkumar Pradhan, Nizamuddin Ansari and Manjit Shrestha.

Despite playing in the T20 Qualifiers in the UAE, Amrit and Rahul were kept as reserve players in the ODI Qualifiers in New Zealand. Sanjam has been listed in the preliminary squad for the first time since winning the ICC World Cricket League Division 3 in Bermuda back in May 2013. He was out of action for quite some time due to eye aliment. Chandra was not included in the T20 squad in the UAE.

Nepal’s veteran cricketer and former captain Binod Das was left out again. His hope of making it to the national team seems unlikely because he hasn’t even been named in the preliminary squad.

CAN has to send the list of the final squad exactly a month ahead of the World T20 on February 16. Nepal will open its campaign against Hong Kong on March 16. It will then take on host Bangladesh on March 18 and Afghanistan on March 20.

Nepal wraps with consolation win

Nepal wrapped up its ICC World Cup Qualifiers campaign with a consolation win on Tuesday thumping Uganda by 160 runs in the ninth place playoff played at the Bay Oval 2 in New Zealand.

Nepal elected to bat first and scored 240 runs losing all the wickets with two balls to spare and bowled out Uganda for 80 runs in 36.3 overs. The first victory in the last match of the Qualifiers campaign put a brake on Nepal’s five match losing streak in the tournament.

Earlier, Nepal had lost all four matches of the group stage against UAE, Scotland, Hong Kong and Canada and finished at the rock bottom of five team group. Similarly, Nepal had gone down by seven wickets against the Netherlands in the seventh place playoff match on Sunday.

Middle order batsmen Prtihu Baskota (59) and Sharad Vesawkar (41) were the highest run contributors for Nepal.

On Tuesday as well, Nepali failed to get bright start as it lost openers Mahesh Chhetri (19) and Pradeep Airee (23) and third batsmen Gyanedra Malla (8) with 70 runs on board. Captain Paras Khadka gave some resistance scoring 30 off 56 that included two fours.

Binod Bhandari fired 35 off 21.

Charles Waiswa claimed three wickets of Nepal while Faruk Ochimi and Davis Karashani picked two wickets apiece.

In the Uganda´s run chase, all rounder Sagar Pun claimed three wickets as only three batsmen managed to step on double digit figure.

Sompal Kami and Shakti Guachan pocketed two wickets each.

Nepal defeated, yet again

Nepal´s disastrous run at the ICC World Cup Qualifiers has continued. Team Nepal faced its fifth successive defeat on Sunday, going down against The Netherlands by seven wickets in the in the seventh place playoff match held at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui in New Zealand.

Nepal was put in to bat first, and it posted a meager 171 for 9. The Dutch team chased down the target with more than 18 overs and 7 wickets to spare.

Nepal lost its first wicket very cheaply, as has been the norm in the tournament, today as well, with the score at 16 in the 7th over. That began a spate of wicket falls, and half the side was back in the pavilion by the time score was 54 (in the 20th over).  Of the 5 wickets to fall, Gyanendra Malla and Prithu Baskota failed to open scoring. Of the top 5 batsmen, Paras Khadka, with 29 off 38, was the only one to reach double figures.

Sharad Vesawkar, with 42 off 90 deliveries, remained the highest scorer for Nepal. Shakti Gauchan provided some late order resistance, coming in at 9 and scoring 26. The best thing for Nepal was that the team lasted all 50 overs. There were 16 fours and a six (from Paras Khadka) from Nepali batsmen, which highlights the percentage of dot balls faced by them and the domination from Dutch bowlers.

19-year old Vivian Kingma was at miserly best for the Dutch, giving away 18 runs in his 10-over spell and nailing down Gyanendra and Paras. Ahsan Malik took three wickets in 4 overs.

The 172 run target was never going to be challenging for the Netherlands, and it proved not to be so. Apart from losing Stephan Myburgh early on, there were no surprises for the Dutch team. The other opener, Eric Szwarczynski, scored 56 and ensured there were no hiccups for his team. Nepali team’s misery ended in the 32nd over as the Netherlands overhauled the target.

After the match, Nepali captain Paras Khadka summed up his team’s disappointment. “We haven’t played well at all and even today we were outplayed. We are not putting the effort that we are known to put at difficult times,” said Paras, adding, “Everybody is trying but performance is not coming for us. In other words we are playing much below our standards.”

Talking about the last match left for Nepal, against Uganda, coach Pubudu Dassanayake said, “We are desperately looking for a win. We obviously want to finish on a high.”

This is the first time Nepal lost five matches in a row in a tournament. Earlier, Nepal was defeated by the UAE, Scotland, Hong Kong and Canada in the group stage of World Cup Qualifiers.

This was also Nepal´s sixth straight defeat in the 50-over format, if the loss to Afghanistan in the ACC Emerging Teams Cup was also taken into account.

With inputs from Devendra Subedi, who’s in New Zealand.

Nepal finish group stage winless

Nepal has suffered fourth consecutive defeat at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 qualifiers. Canada, who have been struggling at the tournament itself, defeated Nepal by 12 runs in the last match of the groups stage on Tuesday.

Gyanendra Malla´s 86 runs went in vain as Nepal was chasing a target of 256 runs, in its last match of the group stage at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch in New Zealand.

Nepal managed 243 for nine in the match reduced to 41 over-a-side due to rain. In its previous matches, Nepal was defeated by UAE, Scotland and Hong Kong in the 5-team group A.

Nepal is already out of the race for a berth in the World Cup 2015, and will play playoff matches to determine its ranking.

Like in its previous matches, Nepal failed to get a good start, which was needed to overhaul a huge total. Nepal lost opener Sagar Pun for a nought. But other opener Pradeep Airee (26), in place of regular opener Anil Mandal, forged an 86-run partnership for the second wicket with Gyanendra anchoring Nepal´s hope.

Gyanendra scored nine boundaries in his knock of 97 balls forged a 32-run partnership for the third wicket with skipper Paras Khadka (17) and 31 for the fourth wicket with Prithu Baskota (15). Gyanendra was caught in the penultimate ball of the 30th over by Hamza Tariq off Khurram Chohan.

Khurram Chohan claimed four Nepali wickets in his nine-over spell giving away 52 runs. Similarly, Jeremy Gordon, Cecil Pervez and Jimmy Hansra got one wicket each.

Sharad Vesawkar and Binod Bhandari contributed 17 runs each, Shakti Gauchan 15, while Basnata Regmi (25) and Sompal Kami (8) remained unbeaten. Nepal got 16 runs as extra.

Earlier, Raza-ur-Rehman contributed highest 89 off 87 for Canada before being run out by Prithu Baskota. The number five batsman smashed nine boundaries as Canada made 225 for 9. Raza shared 84 run stand for the fourth wicket with opener Nithes Kumar (67), the second highest scorer.

Nepali bowlers failed to restrict the Canadian batsman and runs flowed much too easily for Canada. Sompal Kami claimed three wickets for Nepal in his eight over spell giving away 64. Similarly, Basanta pocketed two wickets while Shakti and Sagar pocketed one wicket each.

Disappointed Nepal captain Paras Khadka said his team pushed hard for the win but had not been consistent enough. “Things really haven’t gone well for us. We came to New Zealand really well prepared but we haven’t executed our plans and we haven’t played anywhere near to our potential.”

“We need to show more consistency. We want to stay as highly ranked as possible, so we will continue to push ourselves in the remaining matches in the tournament,” he said.

Forgettable outing

If memories can be erased, a memory that I will surely erase will be the Cricket World Cup 2015 Qualifiers. Not for that we failed to qualify for the World Cup or that we couldn’t be in top four with a hope of ODI status, but for the impact the results of the tournament could have on future of our cricket.

With four losses in four matches, three heavy ones and one tight one, it’s now look very difficult that Nepal’s world ranking will improve. It couldn’t win next match, then either we remain at the same ranking or we’ll go down by a place.

The finishing is crucial because International Cricket Council (ICC) is in the discussion to restructure global cricket. It’s discussing everything – from worst (giving Australia, England and India all the powers to run cricket) to the best (tier-system in Test cricket). The World Cricket League, in which we’re in Division 2, could also be restructured.

If ICC considers the Qualifiers, in which all teams of WCL Division 2 and four teams of Division 2 participated, a part of WCL, we could well be relegated to Division 3 by virtue of finishing among last two.  That’ll be a setback.

But bigger looking setback could come if ICC decides to re-introduce some kind of global cricket structure. Nepal could end up much lower than it’s capable of and you never know how and when we would climb up the ladder, if somehow ICC puts into place a ladder system.

This brings back the haunted memory of 2004 ACC Trophy, in which Nepal lost to Qatar in quarterfinals thus finishing ranked lowly than its capacity. That one loss was determined a lot of bad things for us as ICC decides to introduce World Cricket League based on regional ranking.

Nepal was put into Division 5 while teams competitive to Nepal in Asia at that time were much higher. UAE and Oman were in Division 2 and Hong Kong was in Division 3.

Well, Afghanistan was with us in Division 5 and they went all the way up to qualification to World Cup and we could argue that Nepal could have done the same. However, the rise of Afghanistan on cricket was something a magic – an exceptional case – and that could not be replicated easily.

I am not going to argue what went wrong in New Zealand. I am not going to blame players or coach. For whatsoever they had done so far to make us proud has been due to their own talents and hunger to success than anything else. And, also I am not going to repeat what we need to do because it’s the same things that I have been telling for a decade now.

I will just say that to keep up with our dreams and hopes, we need professional plans and implementations, not just the luck!

Hong Kong thrash Nepal’s WC hopes

Nepal’s miserable performance in New Zealand continued as Hong Kong thrashed Nepal by 10 wickets with 100 balls remaining to record their first win in 50-over match since 2000.

Openers Irfan Ahmed hit 86 and Waqas Barkat got 56 as they went past Nepal’s lowly total of 150 in 33.2 overs without any trouble.

The huge loss means Nepal’s chances of qualifying to Super Six, therefore World Cup 2015 and/or ODI status for next four years, is now practically put to rest.

basant-500x428-7920537

Scotland’s victory over UAE later in the day ensured that Nepal has no chance whatsoever to reach the Super Six stage.

Nepal lost the match half-way through the first innings when it lost 8 wickets for 65 runs on board with only captain Paras Khadka getting double-digit, 29. The top and middle order failed miserably with no one scoring much.

Anil Mandal (3), Sagar Pun (2), Gyanendra Malla (0), Prithu Baskota (1), Shakti Gauchan (8), Sharad Veswakar (4) and Binod Bhandari (8) all couldn’t cope with Hong Kong bowling.

Pacer Haseeb Amjad was the chief destroyer taking 4 for 40 off his 9.3 overs. Aizaz Khan and Irfan Ahmed grabbed a couple of wickets each.

If Nepal reached a respectable total, it was because of Basant Regmi and Sompal Kami to added 57 of 9th wicket. Basant got out as last man after scoring 45 while Sompal, who had been out on duck in earlier two matches, hit 26.

irfan-500x726-2098592

For Hong Kong, which has been performing brilliantly in the tournament, the score was never going to be a trouble. Irfan, who had his a century a day earlier, was seen in a same flair while Waqas who struggled earlier to score got a patient half-century to guide their team home.

Spinners bowled tightly in middle overs but that was never going to be enough.

There is nothing for Nepal to take away from the match apart from the hope that it was a bad day. It’s Nepal’s fifth straight loss in New Zealand including two warm up matches, which were tight, and two earlier league matches, both of which were big margin losses.

Hong Kong captain Jamie Atkinson was thrilled with another strong performance, which sees his side move to top spot in the Group A table. “Winning is a habit, and with three wins from three – we couldn’t have asked for a better start.”

“The two openers did a brilliant job today. The team is really enjoying their cricket, confidence is high and we just need to keep our consistency up,” he said.

Nepal captain Paras Khadka was disappointed after his side’s third straight loss. “We’ve worked very hard to make it this far, but unfortunately at this tournament things haven’t fallen into place for us.”

The skipper hopes for a better performance from his team in the final group match against Canada.

“The tournament’s still not over for us. We still need to push for that highest position possible, so that we stay as highly ranked as possible.”

Nepal’s final match of first round is against Canada on January 21.

Scotland hand Nepal second loss

Nepal has slumped to its second consecutive defeat in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers. And the defeat has been as bad as the first one. This time it was against Scotland, who managed a 90-run victory at Queenstown Events Center in New Zealand on Thursday.

Nepal was chasing a target of 250, after putting in Scotland to bat. The Nepali batting, in absence of captain Paras Khadka and wicketkeeper/opening batsman Subash Khakurel, never got going and managed mere 159. Paras was rested due to back pain and Subash is yet to recover fully from fever.

Earlier, on Monday, UAE had thrashed Nepal by 102 runs.

Nepali batting suffered an early jolt in the very first ball, when opener Sagar Pun was caught by Matthew Cross off Rob Taylor.

The other opener Anil Mandal managed 10 off 17 deliveries. Nepal lost first three wickets with only 27 runs on board, with 43 overs of the innings still remaining. Shakti Gauchan, who was promoted to bat at number four – following his 37-run knock against UAE – did not bother the scorers and was out for a duck.

Stand in skipper Gyanendra Malla contributed 34 and that remained as the highest score for Nepali batsman. The number three batsman hit six fours in his knock of 61 balls. Sharad Vesawkar made 30 off 64.

Sharad was the only batsman to get some partnership going, forging 33-run stand with Gyanendra for the fourth wicket and 36-run stand with Prithu Baskota (21) for fifth wicket. The other notable contribution came from Basanta Regmi, who remained unbeaten for 20 off 31. Nepal’s last three wickets fell for 18 runs in five overs, and the side was dismissed for 159 in 46.1 overs.

Iain Wardlaw claimed three wickets of Nepal followed by two wickets each of Rob Taylor and Majid Haq. Safyaan Sharif and Kyle Coetzer share one wicket apiece.

Earlier, Freddie Coleman scored an unbeaten 64 off 68 as Scotland put up 249 for 7. Coleman hit four fours and a six. Opener Calum MacLeod contributed with 46 off 48. However, Scotland innings wasn’t as easy as it looks on the scorecard.

Nepali bowlers had kept it tight till almost the fag end of the first innings. At one point, Scotland had 7 wickets down for 190 runs, with less than 6 overs to go. But late charge from Safyaan Sharif, who scored 25 off 17, took the target to run-a-ball.

Twenty-three year old Coleman was pleased that his team was able to bounce back from its earlier loss to record such a decisive victory.

“It was nice to get some runs and we got off to a good start, but it was quite tricky during the middle overs with the spinners. The pitch has been played on a bit so it is a bit slow which made it difficult to hit the ball into the gaps, but it was nice to kind of hold my patience a little bit and score a few at the end.”

The last four overs cost Nepal 51 runs when Gyanendra Malla relied on his spinners and didn’t hand over the ball to his best bowler whose figure was reading 7-0-21-3. Sompal Kami eventually bowled 49th leaking 14 runs and ending with figure of 8-0-35-3. Sagar claimed two wickets followed by one wicket each from Shakti and Basanta.

Nepal is in Group A and will play against Hong Kong on Sunday (Jan 19) and Canada on Tuesday (Jan 21) in other matches of the group. Top three teams will secure berth for the Super Six round.

Nepal start CWC Qualifiers with huge loss to UAE

Nepal made a disastrous start in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Qualifiers losing to United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 102 runs at Rangiora Oval, New Zealand.

UAE scored 297 for 8 in 50 overs – thanks to century by Shaiman Anwar and half-century by Swapnil Patil, before ending Nepal’s innings at 195 in 48.1 overs.

Nepal was out of contention within 18 overs of its innings when five batsmen – Anil Mandal (0), Mahesh Chhetri (9), captain Paras Khadka (12), Sagar Pun (25) and Gyanendra Malla (4) were back to pavilion with scoreboard reading 53 for 5.

Manjula Guruge bowled some brilliant pace to get both the openers out – Anil trapped lbw in first ball of second over and Mahesh bowled.

Kamran Shazad added two – Sagar and Gyanendra – after Paras was dismissed softly by Amjad Javed.

Binod Bhandari played aggressively in an attempt to accelerate run-rate and to see if there was a chance, but his over aggression made his knock short. He scored 37 off 29 balls adding 49 with Sharad Vesawakar.

Sharad and Shakti Gauchan did score runs, but that was more an attempt to narrow down the margin as net run rate could come into play in later stage of the tournament.

Sharad completed his half-century in 82 balls and was out a couple of balls later. His 54 off 86 balls was a patient knock and consisted just three fours.

Shakti remained unbeaten on 37 off 53 balls as Nepal lost last three wickets within a run. Sompal Kami and Jitendra Mukhiya lasted three balls together.

Earlier, Nepal had UAE opener Amjad Ali in first over as a run out but failed to put pressure on UAE as they continued to score runs against pacers and spinners alike.

Salmas Faris (35) and Khurram Khan (21) created some foundation on which Shaiman and Swapnil created their brilliant knock.

The pair added 145 runs for fourth wicket and took away the match from Nepal’s hand. Anwar completed his century in 92 balls and was out on 109 off 96 balls while Patil got 74 off 78 deliveries.

UAE should’ve passed 300 mark but some tight bowling and wickets in later stage of innings kept them tight. Apart from Javel (16 not out) no other batsmen in lower order got double-digit.

Once again, Basant Regmi was pick of Nepali bowlers with 3 for 43 while Jitendra Mukhiya, despite being hammered in last over, got 2 for 58 in 8 overs. Shakti and Sagar also claimed a wicket each.

Nepal’s next match is against Scotland on January 16, Thursday.

Players have such hunger to do well: Dassanayake

Aqib Javed, Paul Collingwood and Pubudu Dassanayake are popular figures in international cricket who have played crucial roles in the preparation of their respective sides for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier New Zealand 2014 (CWCQ), which begins on Monday with four matches.

Aqib, who is the UAE coach, was a member of the Pakistan side that won the ICC Cricket World Cup 1992 and also played in the 1996 tournament, besides featuring in 22 Tests and 163 ODIs from 1989 to 1998. Collingwood represented England in three ICC Cricket World Cups (2003, 2007 and 2011), led England to the ICC World Twenty20 West Indies 2010 title and played 68 Tests, 197 ODIs and 35 T20Is from 2001 to 2011, and he has prepared Scotland.

Pubudu Dassanayake is the Nepal coach who played 11 Tests and 16 ODIs for Sri Lanka between 1993 and 1994.

The UAE opens its campaign against Nepal on Monday, and Aqib said he had been paying special attention to his batsmen. “We will be playing in conditions which are not familiar to any of our players. It is our first trip to that region.”

“We have a good batting unit, but it has struggled on green, seaming tracks. That’s why I am working extra hard with the batters specifically on how to counter seam and swing,” said Aqib.

Dassanayake said Nepal was determined to perform strongly at the tournament.

“The guys have such hunger to do well, there have been no problems getting them to perform. It has really helped us to be here early and get used to the conditions. The guys took two to three days to get over the jet lag and now we’re really settled.

“The conditions are very different here. Weather-wise, it is similar to Nepal. In the evenings, it gets colder in Nepal too. But the wicket and ground conditions are different. The guys have such hunger to do well.”

Collingwood’s Scotland faces Hong Kong on Monday, and the former England all-rounder said his side had prepared well for the 20-day tournament in which the finalists qualify for the ICC’s flagship event, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

“The team is ready and excited. I don’t think the preparation could have been any better, and we’ve got confidence from the three wins (in practice games)”, said Collingwood, adding: “We’ve nailed down an approach that we want to use throughout the tournament, and the guys have performed well in the middle.”

Canada, which takes on the UAE on Wednesday, is being coached by Andy Pick, who played 195 first-class matches for Nottinghamshire and Wellington in which he scored 2,259 runs and took 495 wickets. He also helped England to two ICC U19 Cricket World Cup semi-finals.

Pick said the biggest challenge for his team has been adapting to the weather.

“We spent a few days in Auckland and played against a local team. It was an acclimatisation process really. Some guys have come from Winnipeg, where the temperature was minus 20 degrees, and they’ve come here where it’s 20 degrees or so, so for some of them the temperature change has been up to 40 degrees!”

Pick said his main focus had been on improving team confidence after the side’s 12th place finish at the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier UAE 2013 (WT20Q). “I am getting the group together, getting them to produce their best cricket, and get them upbeat. There are some new faces in the team and I want to instill some self-belief in the team.”

Netherlands meets Uganda on the opening day of the tournament, and it is coached by Anton Roux, who played four first-class matches for South Africa’s domestic side Northerns.

The former off-spinner was delighted with his team’s preparations in New Zealand, saying: “We hit the ground running after an extensive flight schedule from Amsterdam. Our preparations have been spot on so far. We have had only good experiences with the people and facilities of New Zealand.

“We focused immensely on our strength and conditioning prior to the ICC WT20Q and this tournament. I think it is safe to say that this is the fittest that the Dutch team has been in a long time, and I trust that this will hold us in good stead in a very demanding tournament. As the tournament goes on, I am hoping our guys step up another level in performance.”

Hong Kong’s player-coach Mark Wright is confident that his side will continue its recent run of good form into the tournament.

“The result in the UAE at the ICC WT20Q was great for Hong Kong cricket, and Hong Kong. We want to go about our business here in New Zealand in as positive a way as possible and really carry forward with the good results from that tournament. It’s a different format, and it’s one that will test us more over time.

“We also have a slightly different squad to that of the ICC WT20Q. New faces bring new energy. We’ve got a fairly young side, and it’s a side that wants to learn, so I am confident with the squad we have here.

“The two practice matches we’ve had have been invaluable in many ways. In particular, we’ve been able to experience the conditions. It was more about that experience than the results. Obviously, the conditions are foreign to us, being from Hong Kong, so any chance to spend time in foreign conditions is great.”

Uganda coach Johan Rudolph was very pleased with his side’s preparation, having arrived in New Zealand on 3 January.

“It’s been very worthwhile arriving early and assessing the playing conditions and the weather. We’ve had two practice matches and the final two warm up matches before the tournament starts.

“Our bowling and fielding are good. Our batting has been going really well, and hopefully we can carry that form through to the tournament.”

Battle for two spots in Cricket World Cup 2015 set to begin

The ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier New Zealand 2014 (CWCQ) gets under way on Monday 13 January, with 10 of the leading Associate and Affiliate sides in the world vying for the final two qualification spots in the ICC’s pinnacle event, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 (CWC).

The 10 sides taking part in the ICC CWCQ NZ 2014, formerly known as the ICC Trophy, have been split into two groups of five teams each, with top ranked United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Group A alongside 2005 winner Scotland, 2009 finalist Canada, Hong Kong and Nepal. Group B includes 2001 champion Netherlands, two-time finalist Kenya, 2001 finalist Namibia, Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Uganda.

The top three sides from each group will progress to the Super Six stage, where they will play the teams from the opposing group. The top two sides from this stage will progress to the 1 February final, which will be played at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln.

The finalists will join the 10 Full Members as well as Afghanistan and Ireland in the ICC CWC in Australia and New Zealand, which will be played from 14 February to 29 March 2015.

The winner of the 1 February final will join co-hosts Australia and New Zealand, alongside Afghanistan, Bangladesh, England and Sri Lanka in Pool A, while the runner-up will team up with defending champion India, Ireland, Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies and Zimbabwe in Pool B.

Four matches will be played on day one of the ICC CWCQ NZ 2014, with top seed UAE taking on Nepal at Rangiora Oval, Christchurch, second seed Netherlands facing Uganda at Bay Oval, Tauranga, Kenya meeting PNG at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, and Scotland going head to head with Hong Kong at Queenstown Events Centre, Queenstown.

All the 34 matches will have reserve days.

With so much at stake, the teams have been pulling out all stops to prepare for the tournament.

In Group A, Khurram Khan will be leading the UAE, which finished third in the ICC World Cricket League Championship (WCLC), a tournament that saw Ireland and Afghanistan earn automatic qualification to the ICC CWC 2015 by virtue of claiming the top two spots.

The veteran said that the ICC CWCQ NZ 2014 will provide a golden opportunity for his side. “If we qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, it’s going to do a lot of good to the UAE cricket.

“Even though it is the top seed, it will be difficult for the UAE right from the group stage. The conditions in New Zealand are completely different to those in the UAE. So it will be a challenge for our batsmen to score heavily and for the pacers to handle the pressure of leading the attack.”

Netherlands is the top-ranked team in Group B, and captain Peter Borren was confident that his side can go all the way to the final.

“I would say that we have a very good chance of qualifying. I think we have a well drilled side which has a great balance of talent and experience.

“Conditions in New Zealand can vary quite a bit from venue to venue. I believe that we have a squad with the experience to deal with those variations. Most of our players have been around long enough to adjust,” he said.

Borren, the Christchurch-born who also represented New Zealand in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, was delighted with his side’s preparations in New Zealand. “The team spent a fantastic week training and playing in Whangarei. I think we have achieved what we needed to during the preparation phase, with bowlers getting overs under their belt and batsmen spending time in the middle.”

Third-seeded Scotland will be skippered by Kyle Coetzer, who said his side needed to continue its positive momentum. “It will be a tough tournament and we will have to win every match. But our momentum is good. We’ve got the leading spin bowlers in Associate cricket – Majid Haq especially,” said Coetzer.

Canada, which is seeded sixth in New Zealand, is aiming to revive its fortunes under new coach Andy Pick and new captain Jimmy Hansra, who has taken over the reins following Ashish Bagai’s retirement.

Hansra said his team’s first target was to progress to the Super Six stage. “The tournament format means there will be no meaningless matches. So we’ll have to be on our toes throughout, as we aim to advance to the Super Six stage.

“The reason we came in early was to practice. The practice game allowed us to acclimatise, and we’re looking forward to the tournament matches. The guys have refreshed, and we’re very happy and excited with our preparation. This group is very hungry,” said Hansra.

Hong Kong, which qualified for the ICC CWCQ NZ 2014 after finishing fourth in Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 2 in 2011, recently qualified for the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 after finishing sixth at the ICC WT20Q UAE 2013, and captain Jaime Atkinson said his team had been training hard to carry the momentum into the longer format of the game.

“Our confidence is high after the ICC WT20Q. We trained hard in Hong Kong over Christmas and the New Year, and then arrived on 2 January,” remarked Atkinson.

In the lead up to the tournament, Hong Kong played two practice games against a local Canterbury side, which the captain believed had been vital for his side’s preparation.

“We lost both the matches but the games benefitted us. The lads got used to the conditions, and the matches helped us get over the jet lag and give the lads an opportunity to put their hands up for selection.”

Ninth-seeded Nepal will be led by skipper Paras Khadka, who said the tournament was an enormous opportunity for his side.

“It is a dream to get to the 50-over World Cup. We’ve already qualified for the World Twenty20 and are very happy about it, so now, we will go out all guns blazing for this tournament,” Khadka said.

Nepal trained in Sri Lanka before arriving in New Zealand on 28 December, and the all-rounder said of the preparation: “The main reason we came here early was to acclimatise. We felt that in Bermuda for WCL Division 3 in April 2013, the first week was really hard – the time difference, the temperature. It’s really helped us to have the time here.”

Namibia captain Sarel Burger, who also played in Namibia’s sole campaign at the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2003 said: “I think qualifying for the ICC CWC 2015 would be a dream come true for any cricketer from Namibia.”

“The wickets in New Zealand are quite quick and quite greenish. I think they favour seam bowlers a bit better. But at the end of the day, you must be prepared to play in any conditions, and the team must be prepared to play wherever.”

PNG will be aiming to qualify for its maiden global ICC event, and captain Chris Amini believed his side was well prepared for a tough tournament.

“We competed in the South Australia Cricket Association’s (SACA) Premier League and won the inaugural T20 Cup. It’s a good sign leading into the ICC CWCQ and we’ve got momentum leading into the tournament,” he said.

The 29-year-old continued: “We’re confident after our performance in the ICC WT20Q in the UAE. It’s a different format here, but we’re confident. We’ve shown that we can compete and beat the top teams on the biggest stage.”

Uganda’s Davis Karashani Arinaitwe was hoping to lead his side to qualify for its maiden ICC CWC, something he said would be an historic achievement for his country. “For us as a nation, it would be a very, very big honour. Personally, it would be a dream come true,” he said.

The Uganda team arrived in New Zealand on 3 January and played and won two practice matches. But the skipper downplayed the results.

“It’s never about the results when you are playing practice games. It is about getting used to the weather and the wickets. It’s about acclimatizing and getting into the New Zealand time zone. We achieved what we wanted in the first few days, so we are good to go for the tournament,” he said.

The two groups are:

Group A – UAE (A1), Scotland (A2), Canada (A3), Hong Kong (A4), Nepal (A5)
Group B – The Netherlands (B1), Kenya (B2), Namibia (B3), PNG (B4), Uganda (B5)

Provided they qualify, each of the top three teams will retain its ranking from the Group stage through to the Super Sixe stage, regardless of its finishing position in the group. For example, UAE will be ranked A1 whether it finishes first, second or third at the end of the group stage.

If the fourth-ranked team in a group qualifies for the Super Six stage, it will adopt the ranking of the team that it has replaced. For example, if Hong Kong qualifies at the expense of the UAE, Hong Kong would follow the fixtures for A1 in the Super Six Stage.

Kenya overcome Nepal

Kenya is far better experienced in international cricket than Nepal – and although they’re not performing to their name, they showed they could emerge out of trouble to register victory on Saturday.

Chasing Nepal’s 265/9, Kenya were lost 7 wickets with 171 runs on board, but unbeaten quickfire knock from Thomos Odoyo building on knocks of Maurice Ouma, Irfan Karim and Steve Tikolo ensured their one-wicket win with just one ball remaining.

For a fitting conclusion of his knock, Odoyo, who has already played 134 ODIs, hit a four off Sompal Kami’s fifth ball of last over sealing the win. He scored 66 off 44 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes.

His innings provided relief to Ouma, who played patiently for run-a-ball 73 but got out with his team needing 22 runs for victory. Veteran Steve Tikolo has hit 29 to accelerate Kenya’s innings after a slow start that saw them lose frequent wickets.

Opener Karim hit 44 off 70 balls to get scoreboard ticking in Kenya’s innings that saw left-arm spinner Shakti Gauchan come in as new-ball partner to Sompal Kami and walk away with 4 wickets in 10 overs giving away 28 runs.

Sagar Pun took 3 wickets and Basant Regmi took 1 wicket with their spin but pace bowlers were hammered. Sompal went for 86 runs in in 9.5 overs while Jitendra Mukhiya gave away 67 runs for a wicket in his 10 overs.

Earlier, opener Anil Mandal hit a half-century as Nepal scored a respectable total with contributions coming in from Binod Bhandari (48), Pradeep Airee (42), Basant (23*), Sarad Vesawkar (23) and Prithu Baskota (21).

Regular opener Subash Khakurel and captain Paras Khadka didn’t participate in the action in the match that was 14-player a side with 11 fielding and 11 batting.

After two loses in nail-biting finishes in practice matches, Nepal will take on UAE on Monday, when the tournament gets underway.

Brief Scorecard: Nepal 265 for 8 in 50 overs (Anil Mandal 62; Binod Bhandari 48, Pradeep Airee 42; Elijah Otieno 2-40, Nehemiah Odhiambo 2-52) lost to Kenya 269 for 9 in 49.5 overs (Maurice Ouma 73, Thomas Odoyo 66, Irfan Karim 44, Steve Tikolo 29; Shakti Gauchan 4-28, Sagar Pun 3-39) by 1 wicket.

CWC15 Qualifiers: Namibia beat Nepal by 4 runs

An early blitz by pacer Sompal Kami and late florishing of Binod Bhandari alongside Basant Regmi was not enough for Nepal to beat Namibia in first of two official practice matches of Cricket World Cup 2015 Qualifiers.

Nepal came agonozingly close to victory but Namibia denied 18 runs in last 12 balls to register a 4-run victory in a nail-biting finish at Burwood Park, Christchurch. Continue reading

Gautam, Chaudhary shine in Janakpur’s win

Region No 7 (Janakpur) recovered from a slow start to record its first victory in the Women’s National Cricket Tournament after middle-order batswomen Kabita Gautam and Saraswati Chaudhary both scored half-centuries to defeat Region No 8 (Pokhara) by 147 runs victory at the TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur on Sunday.

Region No 1 (Biratnagar) also opened its account defeating Region No 6 (Baitadi) by six wickets in another Group A encounter at the Army ground in Bhaktapur.

Meanwhile, Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) beat Region No 9 (Kanchanpur) by 74 runs in a Group B meeting at the Pulchowk Engineering Ground for its second win in three matches.

The win took Janakpur to third in the Group A standings, level on two points with second-place Baitadi and two points behind leader Armed Police Force, who has won both its matches. Fourth-place Biratnagar also has two points from two matches while Pokhara lies at the bottom without a point.

With two wins from three matches, Bhairahawa climbed into second position in Group B on four points, level with leader Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) and two points ahead of third-place Region No 3 (Kathmandu). Both Nepalgunj and Kathmandu have played a match less than Bhairahawa. Fourth and fifth placed Birgunj and Kanchanpur, which has played only one match, remain pointless.

Opting to bat first Janakpur made a poor start and was at one stage 23/3, with 14 runs coming from extras. But skipper Gautam and Chaudhary, batting at number four and five, rescued the team with a 127-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Chaudhary struck five fours during her knock of 55 runs off 67 balls before being caught and bowled by Karina Gurung. Gautam fell to Prabha Nepali soon after, having made 58 runs off 83 balls with four boundaries.

Mamata Chaudhary, caught and bowled by Sadiksha Pandey, contributed 28 runs to take Janakpur’s total to 194 runs, which included 39 runs from extras. Rest of the batswomen failed to reach double figures.

Gurung and Pandey claimed two wickets each for Pokhara while Arya Aryal bagged one wicket.

Chasing a modest target, Pokhara surrendered meekly as Arya Aryal (16 runs off 39 balls) was the only batswoman to reach double figures. Santoshi Chaudhary and Shanti Chaudhary claimed three wickets each to skittle the opponents for 47 runs in 25.5 overs. Saraswati Chaudhary, Anuradha Chaudhary and Kabita Gurung took a wicket each.

Meanwhile, openers Barsha Rana and Prabina Khadka scored 32 and 67 runs respectively as Bhairahawa reached 197 runs after winning the toss and choosing to bat first. Skipper Indu Berma contributed 24 runs. Bhairahawa’s total included 67 runs from extras.

In reply, Kanchanpur was all out for 123 runs in 26.5 overs with Roshani Bohara (36) and Bimala Bhatta (17) the only two batswomen to make notable contributions with the bat.

In another match, Baitadi opted to bat first and was all out for 86 runs in 28 overs. In reply, Biratnagar achieved the small target losing four wickets in 31.2 overs.

Centuries showered in women’s cricket

Two centuries were witnessed in a single match of the Women’s National Cricket Tournament on Saturday, a day after Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) captain Nary Thapa scored the first century in the history of Nepali women’s cricket.

Rekha Rawal and Anjali Chand of Region No 6 (Baitadi) scored unbeaten centuries against Region No 8 (Pokhara) at the Pulchowk Engineering Ground, Lalitpur.

Rawal smashed unbeaten 131 runs off 98 balls including 19 boundaries. Rawal reached the magical three digits figure in 74 balls.

Meanwhile, Chand clobbered unbeaten 111 runs off 95 balls including 15 boundaries. Chand reached the 100-mark off 90 balls.

As Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) used to conduct women’s cricket matches of only 25 overs in the past, centuries were rare feat. As soon as CAN started the 40-over matches, woman cricketers got opportunity to reach the landmark figures.

Riding on the two centuries, Baitadi, which elected to bat, put up massive 362/1 in allotted 40 overs. Dropati Kunwar scored 31 runs off 58 balls before Prabha Nepali dismissed her.

In reply, Pokhara was all out for 133 run in 31.2 overs. Arati Bidari scored 51 runs off 66 balls and Arya Aryal added 24 runs off 41 balls but their effort went in vain.

Player-of-the-match Rawal was in role again when she came to bowl. Rawal took four wickets. Janaki Bhatta claimed three wickets.

On the other hand, the match between Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club and Region No 7 (Janakpur) as well as Region No 3 (Kathmandu) and Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) remained low-scoring affairs on Saturday. APF registered consecutive second victory in the tournament as it defeated Region No 7 (Janakpur) by two wickets at the Army Cricket Ground, Bhaktapur. Meanwhile, Kathmandu beat Bhairahawa by three wickets at the TU Cricket Ground, Kirtipur.

Janakpur elected to bat but was all out for only 59 runs in 18.2 overs. APF bowlers gave away 26 runs as extras. Otherwise, Saraswoti Chaudhary (unbeaten 14 runs off 19 balls) was the only batter to reach double-digit score.

Player-of-the-match Sita Rana Magar claimed four wickets for APF while Binu Budhamagar took two wickets. Sonu Khadka, Rubina Chhetri and Karuna Bhandari dismissed a batter each.

Despite chasing the low total, APF suffered jolts and won the match with only two wickets. APF reached at 60/8 in 19 overs. Jyoti Pandey scored 17 runs off 27 balls for APF. Saraswoti Chaudhary claimed three wickets while Anuradha Chaudhary took two.

At the TU Ground, Kathmandu elected to field first and bundled out Bhairahawa at 66 runs in 25.4 overs as player-of-the-match Kamala Rai claimed four wickets and Sangeeta Gauchan took three wickets. Shanti Khatiwada dismissed two batters while Ashmita Kharel took a wicket.

Kathmandu bowlers gave away 30 runs as extras. Otherwise, Prabina Khadka (16 runs off 28 balls) was the only Bhairahawa batter to produce double-digit score.

In reply, Kathmandu reach 67/7 in 14.1 overs as Ashmin Karmacharya remained unbeaten with 17 runs off 17 balls. Bhairahawa gave away 20 runs as extras. Indu Berma claimed three wickets for Bhairahawa while Soniya Paudel took two.

Thapa scores maiden ton of Nepali women’s cricket

Scoring a century in a cricket match is itself a milestone for the batter. As women’s cricket started in Nepal only in 2005, century was a distant dream for Nepali woman cricketers till Friday.

However, Nary Thapa, who is one of the first generation woman-cricketers in the country, achieved the milestone on Friday with style.

Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) captain Thapa scored an unbeaten century against Region No 3 (Kathmandu) on Friday at the TU Cricket Ground, Kirtipur in the ongoing Women’s National Cricket Tournament.

Thapa garnered 121 runs off 128 balls for the maiden century of Nepali women’s cricket. She struck 21 boundaries in the process.

Thapa, who reached half-century mark off 52 balls, reached the magical three-digit figure off 109 balls.

Thapa is the first Nepali woman cricketer to score first international half-century. She had scored 66 runs against the UAE in the ACC U-19 Women’s Championship 2010 in Singapore. She had struck a six against Hong Kong in the same tournament to become the first Nepali woman cricketer to strike six.

Riding on the century scored by player-of-the-match Thapa, Nepalgunj sealed a huge 115-run victory over Kathmandu in the match.

Nepalgunj put up 205/2 in allotted 40 overs. Trishna Singh scored unbeaten 33 runs off 61 balls for Nepalgunj.

On the other hand, Nepalgunj bowler Samana Pun achieved another milestone. She took five wickets to bundle out Kathmandu at 90 runs in 29.4 overs. Samjhana Sharma claimed two wickets while Trishna Singh, Anu KC and RekhaBC dismissed a batter each.

Sandhya KC (34 runs off 56 balls) and Rubina Bisunkhe (12 runs off 16 balls) were the top scorers for Kathmandu.

Meanwhile, Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) beat Region No 2 (Birgunj) by 42 runs on Friday at the Army Cricket Ground, Bhaktapur.

Bhairahawa elected to bat and was all out for 135 runs in 31.2 overs. Saraswoti Pun was the top scorer for Bhairahawa with 45 runs off 63 balls while Nitu Bhandari garnered 14 runs off 20 balls.
